More to the point, the Devils don't have anyone like Kovalchuk right now - they don't have a player who very obviously is playing suboptimally and can be 'fixed'. Jack makes some mistakes with puck management, he is not standing still in the D zone waiting for the puck, or totally uninterested in forechecking.

I disagree there. Meier needs to be taught a thing or 2 in the d-zone. He's completely clueless there. Coming from a trash SJ team, and then Ruff...well yea, it's not surprising. I think Keefe can help there.

I’m in strong belief, the Devils are holding out to take a crack at Rod the Bod. I think he will use team xyz to drive up his salary but he will be back with the Canes. Or we will find out what a cheapskate Canes owners are.

I also think Leaf fans want Berube and need to believe Keefe is the Devils #1.

Some Leaf pundits ( and steve dangle ) seem to think Keefe already has the job here. Or at the very least they're talking like they believe he does
It feels like this could be all based off the Lebrun permission to speak tweet though. Unless the Devils had a single interview with him and started negotiating a contract on the spot, I don’t know how he would have the job already.

Berube to the Leafs feels like something so obvious at this point.

Feels like that hire is already made, unless it’s announced that Berube went elsewhere.

I think he’ll wind up in Toronto too. It feels like if the Devils truly felt that Berube was their guy, he would have been hired already. Requesting permission to speak to Keefe this far into the Berube process is telling.

Guys one more thing I should add onto Keefe.

The PP has stumbled late season and than playoffs, but here is the thing, Leafs have had 4 PP coaches in Keefe's tenure, and Keefe has said he doesn't intefere on special teams. He lets the assistants handle that. I have said this but I think the PP was a core player problem and not actually Keefe.

He's also really good with the media. He'll give detailed answers to questions and not be rude or anything like that.

He also deeply cares for his players. If he feels there was unjustice done to his team, he'll let the refs hear it. I think a young team would like that. Here is a compilation of him being mad

Looking at this video, I'm getting Guy Boucher vibes. lol

I think Berube really wants the Toronto job, too. He's gonna hold it up as much as anyone.

1. New Jersey Devils

Pros

  • Highly talented, ascending roster
  • Good cap structure
  • $20M in cap space
  • Savvy front office
  • Wealthy ownership
Cons

  • Poor goaltending
  • Palat's contract
The Devils job contains very little downside and a whole lot of upside. In fact, many had the club pegged as a Stanley Cup contender entering 2023-24 before goaltending and injury woes torpedoed its season.

Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, and several other cornerstone pieces are locked up with team-friendly, long-term deals. Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec, a pair of 20-year-old defensemen, have star potential.

The Devils' blue line is set. The forward nucleus is strong, though some depth pieces are needed.

The three years remaining at $6 million per season for 33-year-old Ondrej Palat is less than ideal, but one bad contract is tolerable considering all the other bargains on the roster. Palat is still a solid third-line checker, too.

But the biggest question mark is in goal, as New Jersey ranked 30th in the league in save percentage this past season. However, Jake Allen was acquired at the deadline and is under contract for another season as a veteran backup. A starter is needed, but GM Tom Fitzgerald has already vowed to go big-game hunting for a goalie. If he could land Jacob Markstrom, as he tried to at the deadline, New Jersey could be a Cup contender next year if everything goes right.

There are also no off-ice concerns with the organization. The team's arena, the Prudential Center, is relatively new, and the ownership group, led by Josh Harris and David Blitzer, is both wealthy and passionate about sports. (They also own the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, and Harris recently purchased the NFL's Washington Commanders.)

If Fitzgerald can adequately address the goaltending, there will be very little downside to this job.
