Derek Ryan spears Nils Hoglander in the nuts, how is this not a 5 minute major penalty for attempt to injure?

So a lot of people still don't understand spearing vs slashing. Not condoning it as it was dirty either way, but that's not a spear. It's a slash.
Sorry bro, that's a spear. Not every spear is a poke going straight into the chest, he clearly "poked" him in an upward motion with the top of his stick into his nuts.

Should have been a major and was missed.

Short and simple answer is the NHL has the worst officiating out of all the major sports and it’s been that way for decades.

The best part is, is that it’s frowned upon to say the officiating is bad — there’s a locked thread on the first page talking about people complaining too much.

The league will never have to improve when the “true” hockey fans just tell you to deal with the worst officials in sports.

Pretty sad that users of a hockey forum don't know the difference between a spear and a slash. Maybe my expectations are just too high for Oiler fans. Or maybe they're doing that ironic ignorance thing.

Probably even sadder that a professional ref doesn't either, but that's Kelly Sutherland for ya. That play needs to be 5 minute major for spearing. Clear as day.

If anybody who has never watched hockey before needs more examples:

You don't even have to watch more than the first one too so your ADHD doesn't have to spiral out of control.

It's funny that this thread was created by a Penguins fan (from what I can tell) and a certain fan base is adamant that this isn't spearing, when Draisaitl got called for a 5 minute major for the exact same play: an upwards stick to the nuts.

It literally doesn't matter that the Canucks lost because they played horribly in the 3rd. But you should be able to recognize and call out crap refereeing when you see it, and this game was absolutely crap refereeing.

You notice how drai spears him in that video instead of the slash that Ryan did? If ryan jabbed him with the blade of his stick in a stabbing motion it would’ve been a 5.

Do you have a camera angle that no one else has showing the tip of the blade making contact?

Follow the money. The league knows that fans who don't really care for stuff like this will still watch the games as long as it doesn't get too gruesome. Then, after the game, their outrage will drive traffic on fan sites. They league also knows that the fans who like the gruesome stuff will absolutely abandon the game if they clean it up too much. Then, after the game, they have to get on the fan sites to respond to that outrage with more outrage.

I bet you were chomping at the bit to flush that out, but you should have taken a different tact.

We are now at the low point where we are comparing soft pushes in the chest with spears to the nuts?

Noted that every time someone lightly punishes someone in the the chest you can retaliate with a nut check, why not just throw the rule book out the game when we are at it?

Maybe Ryan thought that since most Van players don't have balls, Hog doesn't either.

Joking relax all!

Don't like that particular play when it happens. Should be a small bit of honor between combatants. But isolating incidents when there were so many on both sides? That's whining

No offense, but are you going to choose to bury your head in the sand when literally every neutral fan in this thread thinks it's a 5-minute major and there's an entire video about 5-minute majors that have been called for the exact play?

Hoglander has no testicles so its fine.

damnit someone already made the joke

And I just did as well thinking I was witty and quick. Damn

Ryan was pushed in the arm, he was not cross checked in the ribs…

And Hog was tapped on the ass for a good play

This argument about the def of spearing is funny considering that every Oiler fan knows that - according to Jack Michael's - a spear is when Skinner makes a glove save.

I'm biased to the play and the Oilers of course. But at least going forward the league has to make this a mandatory 5 or even 10 with a game. It falls under unsportsmanlike so easily that it actually should epitomize the definition

Mystified by the comments that Hoglander’s check was an ordinary “rub out” which didn’t warrant a response.

The puck was a mile up ice, Ryan had taken a three or four strides to catch up with the play, and Hoglander skates around him from behind to crosscheck him before scurrying away to the bench.

There’s a reason this wasn’t called a major or referred to DOPS. At absolute best, Hoglander was counting on the ref to swallow his whistle so he could get away with a trashy bit of interference. The way he went about it, it’s more like he was hoping Ryan would do something in retaliation. Well, he did. The ref saw the whole thing and rightly judged both players to be worthy of a trip to the box. That’s where it ends. Hoglander’s completely fine and hopefully a bit smarter now.

not the same play at all. That was a clear spear a horizontal push towards the family jewels. Believe me I don't think any Oiler fan actually condones what Drai used to do, and what Ryan did the other night, and if they do, they are an idiot and you shouldn't pay them any attention.

I'm seriously concerned for your vision.

He clearly shovels upward. Look at his hands and stick. He's out there looking like he's shoveling snow. How is that a horizontal motion? Lol. You guys are hilarious.
