Speculation: Who Will Be Signed?

I would assume they are signing him, but I don't know why they haven't yet. I'm shocked something hasn't been announced with the Laval coaching staff as well, since it's one of the most important things for our future, seems to be taking a long time.
My concern is that the 50 contract limit may be the issue.

It's strange that a RFA hasn't signed when the season isn't even over? RFAs gets signed well into the offseason basically all the time.
He's not an RFA. He had an expiring AHL contract and the deadline to sign him to an NHL contract is next week.

Habs rights for Davidson expire on June 1st 2024, he haven't been signed to an ELC yet.

Maybe they feel Davidson will accept some other kind of contract. Or maybe they just don't care if he leaves. It's a shame because I like this idea of building our own depth and Davidson looks like a competitive fellow with an outside shot at becoming an NHLer. However, if they feel the numbers game at fwd isn't working out (too crowded), I guess I could understand why they would decide to go with more vets above a fringe prospect.

Edit: or maybe they will sign ulhik before the deadline. That option is still out there...

Yup. Careful consideration of the 50 contract limit will be a big focus in the years to come. Our draft power was very high and our system is starting to see it filter through.

We have 45 contracts now, and have 13 UFA or RFAs. Likely extending RFAs Xhekaj, Barron and Ylonen, and dropping these 10.

Pearson
Wideman
White
Stephens
Keeper
Maillet
NQ-Norlinder
NQ-Andersson
NQ-Cederqvist
G6-Durandeau

We have 7 more contracts signed effective July 1st.
Beck
Mesar
Reinbacher
F. Xhekaj
Hutson
Tuch
Engstrom

That's 42 with Ylonen. Kapanen and Davidson would make 44.

AHL vet contracts won't count, but we might need about 2 more NHL vet contracts for Laval. So we should land about 46 contracts less guys traded plus guys brought in.

Not looking good for Davidson with only one week to go. He probably doesn't have much leverage as a 5th round overage pick. Might be a positive for us if we can sign him on an AHL contract.

Guessing HuGo are over at the World Championships and we'll get an update on Kapanen in the next day or two.

The Habs have 39 of 50 contracts accounted for, most of any team.
Kind of irrelevant though, Montreal has pretty much the entire NHL roster and over half the AHL roster under contract, so it's normal that we would be closer to the 50 contract limit then a team like Utah who only have 11 of 23 NHL spots accounted for and so are sitting at 22 out of 50 contracts.

For a guy like Davidson, I do wonder if the AHL coaching staff still being up in the air has had any impact since you would expect the coaches to have some say on whether it's worth it to re-sign a guy or not.

I dont think its odd at all that he hasnt been signed yet considering how many different ways this offseason could end up going. Im sure that if Davidson is signed (I hope he will be), it would be a last 1-2 days before his rights are given up/possibly even after. There's a bigger picture but I love the kid.

Why wait if you're HuGo? I think the lack of news is a clear indication he's not getting an NHL contract. I'm sure they have already reviewed his performance, double checked with AHL staff and team scouts, and have made up their minds. Not much new information to be assessed at this point unless they're waiting on a medical report from his late season upper body injury.

There's little leverage for a prospect turning 22 in July. He would be lucky to negotiate anything other than the bare minimum ELC contract. There's no reason to wait until the last minute from MTL's side. I think his best chance now is to entertain an AHL contract or look elsewhere.

He would make more money on an AHL contract then an ELC since ELC cap the AHL salary to the minimum possible. But the medical report might be why he wasn't signed.

The deadline is in a few days for him and a few others. I don't think any of them is getting signed to ELC.

Would def be an interesting use of our above average budget capacities.

Saturday is the deadline to sign:

- Jared Davidson
- Cedric Guindon
- Miguel Tourigny
- Petteri Nurmi

I'm not sure why Nurmi is listed on CapFriendly as his rights expiring 2 years after being drafted. He was drafted out of Europe, which usually gives you 4 years to sign them. Is it maybe because he was drafted as an overager? I believe he was 20 when he was selected.

I'm also surprised they didn't sign Davidson yet. I would think with him doing real well at the Habs camp and then when he got going in Laval, he was doing well. I thought he did enough to at least earn an ELC.

I'd have thought Davidson would get an ELC.
Guindon I'd give an AHL contract to and let him start in the ECHL.
Tourigny I'd give him an AHL contract again.
Nurmi do nothing.

I'm also surprised they never called Tourigny up to Laval to play there and evaluate him in the AHL. He was doing real well in 3R and at some point, Laval needed RDs.
