The Devils have a culture of failure
The thing about journalists (self proclaimed and actual) is that they have very thin skins, never forget a grudge, and have a lot of professional and class solidarity. So when Curt Schilling went off on the media a few years ago and said that people in it need to die (I misremember exactly what he said but that was the main thrust), it was the equivalent of biting the hand that feeds. It’s based less on what he did on the field and more of the controversy surrounding him on those remarks, being completely unprofessional towards his employer in a political campaign donation form, and probably his whole swindling money from the state of Rhode Island thing.
You can say the same thing about Barry Bonds. It’s not about the PEDs with him because David Ortiz will likely get in first ballot, and all but the dumbest/most oblivious people know he juiced. He had a good relationship with the media for some reason (personally I think he’s an all time whiner and threw tantrums at unfavorable coverage, but national baseball media tends to have a lot of Red Sox fans so....) and Bonds had no time for them.
Tl dr: it’s politics.
