What can NYI offer?NY needs scoring and I think he would be a good fit there. What’s the value and both teams fans opinions about this?
We're not in any hurry to get rid of him 'cause there's no cap crunch here, and when he's played he's been really good - like, near-PPG good. So it doesn't make much sense for us to trade him unless we're getting back the sort of return one would expect for a near-PPG scoring top line winger.
Which, of course, is a completely absurd ask and something nobody else should or would pay given the recent injury concerns (even if most of them have been fluky accidents) and any post-PAP worries. Heck, if it was another team who had him, we wouldn't pay. But we're basically playing with house money with him and have no real reason to give that up.
The thing is, I think NYI are at a crossroads. Are they going to attempt a rebuild, or kick the can down the road and retool on the fly?
Not sure Laine makes sense if they are rebuilding, but if they go the retool route maybe.
You must not frequent the Islanders boards? No team ever that is making the playoffs and has everyone signed is going to do a rebuild. That just doesn't happen. They're going to look to get better immediately.
You must not frequent the Islanders boards?
I think they try to retool, but they don’t have much to offer. Their core is on the back 9, and I’m not sure the ceiling is getting any higher as time goes on.
CBJ won’t give Laine away for free. They don't have to offer much of anything for Laine. That's exactly the kind of target they should be looking for - high upside, and pay in risk not a lot of future assets.

I think they try to retool, but they don’t have much to offer. A lot of their core is on the back 9, and I’m not sure the ceiling is getting any higher as time goes on. Not sure Barzal and some of the other pieces they have are the right ones..
CBJ won’t give Laine away for free.
If they want to sure. But this feels a lot like what happened to the Red Wings around 14/15.
SorokinWhat can NYI offer?
Yeah Laine isn’t getting moved for that lmaoRight, but he’s the sort of player you could exchange a lot of nonsense for and get away with it. 4th+7th+C prospect, for instance. Feels like a smart return getting out of a deal, you get 3 pieces, but none of ‘em are really worth anything. It’s just a numbers game- find someone who wants to bet Laine returns to form vs the odds of lower picks and prospects.
What do you think would be appropriate price for Laine? Honestly asking as MTL could be one of the suitors. There is a lot of cap space for next couple seasons and a lot of assets available. ThanksYeah Laine isn’t getting moved for that lmao
No idea. Ideally a veteran 2C on an expiring deal. What do you think would be appropriate price for Laine? Honestly asking as MTL could be one of the suitors. There is a lot of cap space for next couple seasons and a lot of assets available. Thanks
Laine has 3 years left on his contract. Not sure "where he wants to be" should be a consideration until at least 2 years from now. There's the question of where Laine wants to be. And there is the question of whether he is a good lineup fit right now with so many young players needing prime roles, attention, and a consistent environment with fewer distractions.
Those are the things that matter to the Jackets with where they are at in the rebuild, not Laine's cap hit or how many points he scores.
I think - and maybe I'm wrong but - that in this context it's "does he still want to be in Columbus or doe he want a fresh start."Laine has 3 years left on his contract. Not sure "where he wants to be" should be a consideration until at least 2 years from now.
Sure but in this context Columbus isn't obligated to trade him unless the value is there. My point is Laine can make his request, and if he does Columbus should explore the market, but if the trade isn't there then it's not there and Laine is kinda stuck for the time being. That's part and parcel of making a multi-year contractual commitment without an out clause.I think - and maybe I'm wrong but - that in this context it's "does he still want to be in Columbus or doe he want a fresh start."
Christian Dvorak plus B prospect/ late 2nd round pick.No idea. Ideally a veteran 2C on an expiring deal.
Honestly, it's hard to imagine anything being done here unless the idea for Columbus is to strictly get rid of Laine and his contract.
Then the Isles could possibly make a lateral move of sorts that would likely revolve around Lee & Mayfield as the return.
If Columbus sees Laine as someone who should be bringing something other than a line-up shift and comparable salary back, then there's no real wiggle room for these two to dance. I'd think it's going to be hard for Laine and his contract to be moved unless it's incentivized.
The Islanders are a bit tight cap and contractwise. They've got too many players earning top 6 money, but playing like 3rd liners.

Only real consideration should be what another team is will to give up for him versus his value based on his play for Columbus prior to his going on leave. If Laine has buyer's remorse and wants to dictate a trade destination, he should have negotiated that provision into his guaranteed multi-year contract containing an M-NTC.
What is the outlook on Laine's latest injury? Is this a recurring serious issue or a random occurence?
In this scenario it isn't a given that Laine would be in the dressing room.If Laine wants to move on then we're hurting ourselves by keeping him. Think about what is best for our dressing room.
Would have preferred Monahan.Christian Dvorak plus B prospect/ late 2nd round pick.
