How come Adam Boqvist busted so hard while the other Dman chosen from 1-12th overall have all done pretty well if not excellent in the league

Development is not linear, you have to make projections. Sometimes those are wrong.

Haydn Fleury was drafted 7th overall and is a 7th D journeyman.
Griffin Reinhart never played a full season on a NHL roster as a 4th overall.
Slater Koekkoek didn't do much as a 10th overall.
Same with Duncan Siemens as 11th overall.
Dylan McIlrath and his 7 career points were drafted 10th overall, two picks before Cam Fowler.

Still time to turn it around, but Victor Soderstrom isn't looking like a great 11th overall.
I remember everyone being shocked by the McIlrath pick. Nobody had him in the top 10, especially ahead of Fowler. I have no idea what the Rangers were thinking there.

Not all picks hit, that’s normal. IIRC, John McDonough wanted to call him up to bring some PR hype to the Hawks after their abysmal 2018/19 season. It was probably a combo of him being rushed and also not being able to translate his play to the NHL.

I was much more upset we had to give up the 6th OVR than Boqvist in the Jones trade for sure.

He was a high ceiling low floor pick. I recall being surprised a top 10 pick played their D+1 in the CHL instead of the AHL despite being eligible to do so. Even at the point of drafting it was clear at least Hughes and Bouchard were too good for the CHL.

I watched every game the guy played for Brynäs in 17/18 and was extremely surprised that he wasn't loaned back to Gävle after his year in the OHL. Had a tough time in the SHL and a year in a junior league won't change that. Should've gone "home" for two seasons again before moving over to the NHL.

It all comes down to injuries. When healthy, he has been a solid offensive defenseman. He definitely warrants being on PP1 over Werenski.

The talk around him was not like that before the Ekholm trade when he was on the bottom pairing and bleeding defensively. He definitely had his moments, and showed potential but it was rocky and many thought he would bust. Barrie was better than him as a top PP guy, so getting rid of Barrie was a gift, in a way. Of course Bouchard quickly became better than Barrie ever was
Okay, but what does bleeding defensively have to do with power play?

And they traded Barrie for Ekholm. Not to accomodate Bouchard, but because Barrie sucks, and Ekholm does not suck.

This reads as a typical "fitting reality around your narrative"-issue. Look, getting a player like Ekholm has been a project for Oilers for like 10 years. It's not because of Bouchard.

Barrie was our top PP Dman and was better than Bouchard on merit. A lot of times a move is made for several reasons. Ekholm plays a different side than Barrie, so that trade created a hole on the right side, with the obvious plan to graduate Bouchard with a new mentor, and to force coaching to have Bouchard on the top PP. And of course, we needed to ship out salary and Barrie fit the bill. Imo it was a trade with multiple angles

Barrie was a good Dman for us too, and part of the reason he was on the PP over Bouchard was that he was much more defensively responsible. Although I will agree in that perhaps Barrie isn't a guy a contender would have.

He has played with Columbus and Chicago. And been injured, Would not call him a bust just yet.

Is a guy who spent most of his time this season playing on the top pair really a bust?

Boqvist isn't a bust. He just needs a team that's willing to give him the runway to play his game.

I didnt realize he was a poor skater. How does a dman now a days get drafted so high without either size or skating?
His skating was seen as better at the time than it ended up developing, which is not so uncommon with Defensemen. Injuries likely have not helped.

He has great offensive skill with the puck, but he is on the smaller side of things and not particularly strong, so his defensive game lacks. If he can have a better go of it health wise, he may still be able to develop into an OK NHL Defenseman but he's a player where nothing has really bounced his way to date. All weaknesses magnified and strengths not given a great chance to shine through.

Defensemen wind up being a crapshoot most of the time. Bruins drafted Zboril at 13 and he never put it together. They took Brandon Carlo a round later and he's been for better or worse a top 4 rock for them over the past 6 years

He's afraid to take a hit to make a play. Unless you're really good, tough to make it otherwise as a dman playing like that.
