Pop-up spam ads at the top/bottom of the page. Plus, pop-up spam ads between posts. And when the board is slow or broke (like now), you can always count on pop-up spam ads populating when content won't. And pop-up spam ads covering content is absolutely inexcusable. I'm about done with this site. I spend too much time dodging, closing, Xing out, and avoiding spam pop-up ads. This site has gone the way of the Denver Post. An infestation of ads! Yuck!

And I had to close multiple ads while typing this post!

The worst thing about the ads isn't the number (way too damn many) or the way they block the content (constantly) or the way they make scrolling impossible (because they continue to load and push things around for 30+ seconds) or even the intrusive sounds (god make it stop). The worst f***ing part is that they're impossible to close and get out of the way because of deceptive fake close buttons in the corners, and even if you DO manage to close them so you can finish your post, they just repopulate a couple of seconds later.

The 5+ second delay on loading anything is ridiculous. Wtf
What sucks is no one is ever posting about the status of this site when something is going on. Like us, users, aren't worthy to know what is happening.

I work in IT and when something is f***ed first thing we do is to reassure the users that we are aware of the issue and we are working on it. If it takes time we keep them updated throughout the process and when it's done we explain to them what happened.

This forum has been running like shit for 2 decades and we never know what the f*** is happening. If someone posts a thread on the main board about it it gets deleted instantly.

I'm about to go over to Reddit. This is nuts.
Got a link?

I have seen this 3 times today already. The Ads are bad but the delay/lag makes it not worthwhile to try and use the site pretty much.
There was a web browser you could use. The ads are lame and not my biggest iss(it’s still lame)

The lag and speed… and how it constantly refreshes and you lose your post. You’re about to see a mutiny hf

Does anyone know if there's a way to embed NHL.com video now? @forsbergavs32

The media button lists "NHL Videos and Highlights" as an option, but NHL.com changed their site this year, and there doesn't appear to be a way to link to an individual video?

It's $12 a year to become a sponsor and get rid of all this shit. You spend a lot of time here, it's worth it.
Yea, I can also just enable my VPN but it's the principle of it. As someone who works in web development it grosses me out how much people let slide on the Internet. Remember when there was outrage about popups, the collective will of people pushing back and convincing browser providers to block popups killed that shit dead. Yet now we let 50 ads load on a page and in modals with tiny close icons and if anything it's getting worse. Pre roll ads. Intrusive full screen ads. Ads that add frames to pages. Ads that cause pages to be redrawn numerous times. It's grotesque. I mean look at that screenshot I took. There's like 6 of the same ad taking up 80% of the screen. HFBoards don't deserve my money for inflicting that shit on its users.

Yeah, the sponsorship thing feels extortion-y at this point. "Give us $12 or we will deluge you with auto play audio ads and ads that block half the content". I know ad revenue is a necessary evil on the internet, but FFS can we be a tiny bit choosy about which advertisers we let in?

Yea, I mean there are options such as they could upsell features or whatever, but it's definitely hard to match the revenue they get from 10 ads on every page.

I also don't like it from the point of view that its an assumption that everyone can just pay $12 to get rid of ads. I'm sure there are people here who genuinely cannot afford extra recurring payments. So those who can't afford it, or maybe don't have access to a bank account, have to be spammed into oblivion.

One or two ads a page would be tolerable. An ad near the top and maybe one near the comment box, but multiple ads in between posts and ones that you have to scroll repeatedly to get past are just intrusive and shit.

I was writing a post in another thread just now, and there was an autoplay ad that was spamming audio at me while I typed. When I closed it, it just reloaded and started playing again 30 seconds later. I had to just mute my phone's audio to shut it up so I could think.

Just in general, internet ads are just background noise for me now. I've been on the internet since the 90s, and literally only one time in my life has a banner ad showed me something I was interested in that led to a click and a purchase. One of my favorite bands reunited after 20 years and did a tour, and I somehow missed the news until a banner ad from the venue told me about the show a couple days before. Other than that, I have never actually purchased a single damn thing from an ad.

Which begs the question: why do they invest so much money and effort to get in front of my eyeballs? Who are these people who are seeing an ad for brake pads and thinking "Damn, I could really use a set of those right now" and clicking on the ad? I tune out the noise unless it's intrusive, and even then, I'm not intrigued by the product, I'm just annoyed.

This was my experience after my ad block stopped working lol. Didn't realize how unusable this site was
