Dealing with swollen shin from Muay Thai

Hi All,

I was sparring in my muay thai class and somehow while wearing a shin guard I kicked my partner in the knee with an ill timed run out low kick.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent this from occurring and how to deal with the mind numbing pain of a swelling on your shin? (I have iced it a few times already)
