This was absolutely a missed opportunity
Unfortunately, when there's a fan outcry to cast someone, it almost never seems to happen. It doesn't align with the filmmakers' "vision".
In reality, I could see a fan campaign drive up the price on certain actors, and Danny DeVito isn't a bankable movie headliner the way Ryan Reynolds is right now.
On Wikipedia, it says that The Rock, Mark Wahlberg, and Hugh Jackman were 'considered' to voice the role (doesn't mean they ever even talked with the production). Wahlberg and Jackman could both bring the hard-boiled nature the character should have. Ryan Reynolds can have some gravel to his voice (which is in the trailer a bit), but he doesn't use it. He just sounds like standard Ryan Reynolds.
