I wonder how big the chance is that he will be in the NHL next season. It wouldn't be the first time that happens to us.

Steve Miller really loves this tournament.

I'd be surprised if Carle isn't a candidate for multiple NHL coaching vacancies. We've lost a head coach for this tournament before with our good buddy David Quinn.

I just hope that when Carle jumps to the NHL, it's not to a spot where he's guaranteed to fail. Like the Sharks job would probably be really enticing 2 years from now, but any coach who takes it now probably doesn't survive to see the fruits of their labor once all their young talent starts to peak.

I agree. Stay away from the Sharks. It could be a good step for him to be an assistant coach in the NHL next.

It's a shame that Ryan Warsofsky's promising coaching career took a hit there as well.

If Smith does return that's gonna give us some pretty strong C depth again

Smith
Hagens
Moore
Nelson
Connelly
Terrance
Bednarik

Crazy how much our center depth has improved in these tournaments in the last 10 years.

Hard to believe we won't be favorites again.

Augustine is the clear number one, but I'm looking forward to seeing how Hampton Slukynsky performs next season at Northern Michigan.

Even without Smith, this team should be extremely deep at C. But with Smith likely out, I would consider pivoting Leonard back to C ala Gauthier, and consider reuniting that U18 top line.

Musty - Leonard - Perreault
Stiga - Hagens - Ziemer
Connelly - Moore - Whitelaw
Terrance - Nelson - Adams
Eiserman/Bednarik

Maybe Hagens takes Smith’s spot on that line in BC and they have built in chemistry. Don’t love the 06 NTDP guys enough to feel great about them playing with Hagens at U20s.

Anyone else think Max Plante could be a sleeper '06 candidate to make this year's roster? He's become a really well rounded player that plays with a spark and is an excellent distributor. I think he could surprise some people this year if he's given the chance to be a primary offensive contributor for UMD (which I think he will).

Perhaps, I could definitely see that happening. But I'd have some concerns about depth. If I were BC, I would consider trying to deploy Leonard like they did Gauthier and running a top 6 like:

Jellvik - Leonard - Perreault
Stiga - Hagens - Gasseau

Don’t love the 06 NTDP guys enough to feel great about them playing with Hagens at U20s.
I am pretty sold on Stiga, but I'm unsure on Ziemer. I do like his utility and he brings some leadership qualities, and he is an older '06. Typically I wouldn't have him on a team like this, but there just aren't a ton of "top 6" 05's that have impressed me enough at this point. Hopefully some of the depth '05s take a big step this year.

Surprised he waited this long but it's a good problem to have to overcome. We don't lose as many players from our WJC teams as we should because they play NCAA hockey. One of the next steps USAH needs to take is to continually be down 3+ players every tournament and still win.
This. This is the next step for sure. I want us to have an even playing field w Canada every year. It makes it easier to gauge progress. Obviously it’s also a good sign that we have more guys NHL-ready at a younger age. I always celebrate when we lose a guy to the pros.
