PHF ANNOUNCES TOR/CTW GAMES POSTPONED; UPDATED COVID-19 PROTOCOLS

January 20, 2022
by Paul Krotz

January 20, 2022 (Brooklyn, N.Y.) – The Premier Hockey Federation has announced that the regular season games scheduled for Saturday January 22, 2022 and Sunday January 23, 2022 between the Toronto Six and the host Connecticut Whale have been postponed.

The postponements are due to COVID-19 protocols affecting the Toronto Six. The weekend series will be rescheduled for a future date to be determined.

Since early January, the PHF Medical Committee has been reviewing COVID-19 Health & Safety Protocols on a bi-weekly basis and will continue to do so for the remainder of the 2021-22 season. Recent changes include the addition of an ‘Increased Club Transmissibility’ section that reads as follows:

If there are 4 or more High-Risk Group members that test positive with COVID-19 within a 7 day period and have been exposed to other members of the High-Risk Group within the last 7 days, the entire Club will enter into a 5-day pause of all team activity. The Club head team physician in conjunction with League Director of Sports Medicine and/or the Chief Medical Officer will determine if a Club meets the criteria for a pause. The date of this pause will begin the day after the last date of contact with any of the COVID-19 positive individuals and team activity will be able to resume on day 6.

All High-Risk Group members will need to obtain one negative PCR test collected 3 to 5 days after the date of the last exposure prior to re-entry into team activity on day 6 of the pause period.

Full protocols are available online at Covid 19 Protocols - PREMIER HOCKEY FEDERATION.

McKenna Brand has never missed a game in four Premier Hockey Federation seasons, so you can imagine what the last seven weeks have been like for the Boston Pride star forward.

That’s the time her and the rest of the defending Isobel Cup champions have been waiting to get back into competition following a pair of COVID-19 postponements that produced an uncharacteristically long holiday break.

This weekend the wait is over when they host the Metropolitan Riveters at Warrior Ice Arena. ...

Connecticut Whale forward Kennedy Marchment and defender Tori Howran both had a pair of goals including one each in the 5-on-5 portion of the competition and the final shootout. McKenna Brand of the Boston Pride also added a shootout marker in the decisive game. Chuli’s only goal against in the third game was on the final shootout attempt by Pride defender Amanda Boulier. ...

This marked the sixth All-Star event in PHF history and the first since 2020 in Boston. Buffalo also hosted the inaugural event in 2016. This was the first time the event featured three teams and introduced mini games consisting of 10 minutes of 5-on-5, five minutes of 3-on-3, and a five-player shootout. ...

The owners should have put Tumminia out on her posterior immediately after the Lake Placid Bubble debacle. That she survived this long is just further proof that the owners have no idea what they're doing. Now they're going to Florida, where they have (checks notes) no teams and no fan base for a playoff tournament?

Great leadership, Ty. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Hope those payroll checks clear the bank...

Playing their post-season tourney @ AdventHealth Center Ice (a fancy community rink complex that probably came cheap), it's clear that catering to a local fan base is not the Federation's primary motivation. Maybe that's where their remote broadcast team abandoned the equipment when the Lake Placid Bubble burst, and the budget wasn't available to move it. No matter the location or the reasoning, they are counting on their ESPN & TSN coverage to keep the PHF in the weekly North American hockey highlights. So at least the players and staff get a little beach time for their troubles.

Catering to a local fanbase has never been a motivation, it would seem. The teams are barely marketed at all, so I'd imagine the majority of the league's revenue is coming from sponsorships, which I'm sure draw big sums of money with the games being streamed on whatever outlet is the cheapest. But let's be honest, if you look at most of the women's hockey diehards and media members on twitter, most of them haven't left their parents' basement in years, so it's not like they've got any disposable income to buy tickets or spend on products that sponsor the league anyway.

So you finally talked yourself into being a supporter of this League (sorry, Federation). Good on you, Eddie.

So if it is true that the pwhpa is moving into a fully funded league with possible ties to the NHL how can the phf survive and put up a fight?

yeah, I saw this yesterday. seems like the NHL doesn't want to take sides or get dragged into a conflict so they are just going to say figure it out and combine if you want to make this whole thing happen. It helps nothing to have two competing leagues...
I think that's been their stance for a few years now. Hopefully this meeting will involve the NHL in a mediator-type position to lay out the groundwork for a league operated under their umbrella.
