Only if the deal makes sense. We have time to evaluate offers 1/1 and we don't need to be in a panic to do it. Panic moves means we end up trading Petry (Cammy for Bourque).
Without it being panic, while I used to think that Hughes meant Hoffman as one of the players that might just be traded for Cap space and little to nothing in return, I think that he might have meant Petry, actually, and, when he said he'd facilitate a trade if it was right for everybody involved, he might have just meant that, for him, it would mean not having to eat Cap to trade Petry? The return for petry might not have been part a concern when he said "right for everybody."
Moving Petry out of the lineup and not having him drag everybody down might be a huge gain in and of itself. Freeing up 6.25M without having to eat up Cap space would provide options to improve the lineup and be another even bigger gain.
As fans, we might be seeing Petry larger than he still is in this league, not worth less than he actually is for other GMs, as some might suggest.
For a rebuilding team, as we can see with Arizona, being able to take on Cap from other teams can serve to add legitimate assets or interesting futures to your roster.
If we could move both Chiarot and Petry without having any Cap to hold back next year, that would free up almost 10M in Cap room, as Weber's LTIR status would cover Suzuki's new contract. Hughes would now have tons of cards to play in trying to improve the roster, whether it be eat Cap to move another player like Gallagher for an actual return or take on bad contracts in return along with quality prospects in trades.
Right now, Hughes is pretty handcuffed in what he can do and, the ability to eat Cap space at the trade deadline can really have an influence on how much a Cup-aspiring team is willing to pay in futures for a role player addition to their lineup.
Chiarot + Toffoli to a team with no Cap room, by taking back a bad contract and eating Cap from your own players could be an unexpected miracle for a Cap-strapped contender and the return would reflect that.
