Things Leafs fans have defended:

- Babcock is the best coach in NHL and sports history
- Marner has Gretzky like vision
- Kerfoot is a better hockey player than Kadri
- Kadri is a better hockey player than prime Tavares
- Rielly is an elite 1d
- Matthews is better than McDavid
- Matthews is the best player in the league

We are always looking to find some hype train to ride and blow it way out of proportion. Now people are doing the same thing with Rod because he was a phenomenal respected hockey player and now we must ride his coattails based on the hype. Just like ppl did with Babcock because an overtime victory with by far the most stacked roster by leaps and bounds in the Olympic finals is really a great reflection of good coaching and execution and puts him over every other NHL coach who never got such an opportunity.

Some don't though.

You can add Robertson, Liljegren, Bracco, Timashov, Hirvonen, Niemela and possibly Knies and Woll depending, to the list as well.

A huge fanbase in which different people hold different opinions. There might not be too many individuals who believe(d) all of those things to be true.

Different people have different opinions. Not every fan shared those opinions. Some shared some not others. Each fan is different.
There are those who want Rod, and those that don't.

What you are describing is literally just fandom. the claims differ but it happens in every sports, every city.

Toronto has the 2nd worst history for big 6 teams after the Rangers

We have had almost 60 year cup drought

I wonder is anyone on these boarda old enough to remember the 1967 cup? I was 30+ years from being born lool

In those near 60 years we have had to overrate and overhype a lot of things to stay excited and relevant

It has been hard to see other newer teams be more succsessful, get better players, coaches, GMs, scouts etc then us

Leafs nation fell victim to this again and anoited the core guys as the best or top 3 core in the league back in 2017 when they joined the org and we made playoffs suprisingly

It has been hard for most to adjust expectations after seeing how past 8 years have gone. Too many people still defend the core

The only guy who is defendable is Matthews and even he does get overrated but he has been a top 5 player now 3 of last 4 years at worst which is something this organization basically never has had

The Rangers have won the Stanley Cup only once since 1940, in 1994; they lost to the Los Angeles Kings in the final in 2014.

If the goal is to win cups. Leafs have a better history than the rags.

That is what I said

We have the 2nd worst history of the big 6 after the Rangers who have the worst

My bad if it was worded weirdly

If the rangers win the cup this year they pass us though

They have been super competitive mostly since 2005 lockout. A cup now would put them ahead of us

Fans wouldn't be so quick to jump on the hype train if the media didn't hype the team so much.

That's what happens when the media owns the team. The players are hyped to such levels they start to believe it. These guys actually think of themselves as some ideal amd absolute supreme entity beyond our infatile pea brained human comprehension.

The result of an organization lacking accountability.

For those who denied this crsis was coming it's now here. The product of poisonous proprietorship who don't care one whit what their consumer wants. Rogers and Bell taught ML$E everything they know about customer service.

Don't even f***ing worry about it.

Shut up and drink more beer and enjoy the game. Address any complaints to the nearest brick wall. Slam your head against it too while you're at it.

There's no room for any Debbie Downer's on the bandwagon.

It used to be like that around here, but it's really not anymore. The honeymoon period's been over for a bit with the core now and the media seems to be getting that memo too.

The days of Zeke parading around charts that say Marner is better than Kucherov are sorta long gone. And I'm pretty sure the Kerfoot > Kadri take was a take exclusive to him and Dekes, nobody else was stupid enough to believe that.

I'm not so sure. IIRC someone posted the rankings of these two players as calculated by The Athletic at one point and they were basically equal at that time, like Kadri was ranked higher but just by a hair. It seemed ridiculous to me as I was quite familiar with both players at the time and it just proved that these Athletic rankings are like advanced stats - not reliable and should be used for entertainment purposes only.

But it's The Athletic, and a lot of people do seem to buy what they're selling so who knows how many bought into this.

There is nothing wrong with riding the hype train.
After so long, Leafs fans deserve to see a Cup in their lifetime. As much as, or more than others. Just like when the Rangers won after 50 years in 94.

The problem isn't getting on the hype train, it’s knowing when to get off and make changes if it isn’t working. Leaf fans missed their stop already.

I never bought into any of the things listed in the O.P.
I also don't pay much attention to print or social media so they have no influence which probably helps.
I kind of get the hype with prospects though because they are an unknown quantity. Most of the other stuff could be put into perspective just by watching the rest of the league IMO and adjusting your outlook accordingly.

You read a handful of people over the years make idiotic arguments and then present it as a use case for the entire userbase. You're the problem. I have never made any of those claims. Just speak for yourself.

The fans don't control the team, the media coverage, the draft, the trades, etc.

Why are they to blame?

This thread seems like an insincere confession. You're the one who bought the hype.

My best advice:

Sports is just a silly distraction. Go and find a hobby, or volunteer your time to helping people.
