Yeah he f***ing sucks right now. Dude just sits there and waits for the next power play. I've seen more life in a graveyard than what he and Cirelli bring. I know he's human but I am pissed. I know for a fact his contract nonsense is distracting the entire team

Even being just a PP specialist, he's been significantly better at contributing to wins than Cirelli.

I mean as captain of the team making 8.5 million and generally regarded as a star you would hope so.

Just sign a contract already
There not gonna do it until after the season this basically keeps sounding like the Killorn situation more and more . Like we would love to keep him and Stamkos would love to stay if only you can meet my salary demands which we just can’t unfortunately.

Unless Stamkos takes 5.5 to 6.5 per season i don’t see him staying

I don't understand this thinking.

Why be so rigid? Makes zero sense.

If someone offers you a great deal, you take it.

Weird. Keep all your options open.

Anyone know if he was he asked directly about Stamkos or did he volunteer that information?

Not the first time I've send GM's pretend wanting to retain a player.

Because it drives up the price? Why would he open himself up to lowballs and completely cutting ties with Stamkos by saying he's on the market? If someone wants Stamkos they'll still call and that convo starts with "what would it take?" vs "here's what we got". If nothing pans out you look good to Stamkos and stayed by your word that he didn't get moved which benefits him in negotiations. You keep a foot in both doors this way.

i mean, stamkos has a say in any trades too, i suppose. any conjecture here is pretty ridiculous because this is a super complex situation.
otoh, stamkos is only making $6.5 milly this year anyway, what's a million less next year? cmon, bud... cmon... cmon... cmon, stamkos...
Need Stammer and Heddy to both sign 4 x 4 deals.

This is not exactly a John Tavares situation on LI - where the Isles made one of the most brain dead miscalculations in the history of the NHL - because the Bolts have won Cups and have already cemented themselves as one of the most dominant teams of the salary cap era. They have nothing to prove really and can afford some unselfish loyalty more than a franchise that had been wandering in the darkness for about 35 years and should have been ruthless in dealing with JT, but to completely close the door on trading Stamkos, or anyone, is idiotic and counter to the best interests of the team both now and for the future.

The only reason I could see for their being no possibility of trading Stamkos is if he's told JB he wouldn't agree to it. As someone else also pointed out, JB could also simply be lying.

I know we've had issues with his performance but I really do hope he stays.

I can't imagine seeing him in another jersey.

Nah I want him to retire a Bolt - the whole core. It feels weird as shit when Vinny and MSL came back through. Stamkos has never been my favorite but he *is* a Bolt, and I don't want to see him elsewhere.

KUCHEROV, STAMKOS AND LIGHTNING STRIKE SIX TIMES IN CAPTAIN’S MILESTONE NIGHT
Nikita Kucherov
(1-2—3) and Steven Stamkos (1-1—2) were two of four Lightning players with multiple points as Tampa Bay (26-18-5, 57 points) reclaimed third place in the Atlantic Division on the night Kucherov (32-51—83 in 48 GP) overtook Nathan MacKinnon in the NHL’s scoring race and the captain (535-566—1,101) reached the 1,100-point milestone.

* Stamkos, who became the fifth active player with at least 14 career 20-goal seasons with his effort, reached the mark thanks to his 206th career power-play goal. The eventual game-winning tally helped the Lightning captain move past Joe Sakic (205 w/ COL/QUE) for the fifth-most power-play goals with a single franchise in NHL history, trailing only Alex Ovechkin (302 w/ WSH), Mario Lemieux (236 w/ PIT), Luc Robitaille (210 w/ LAK) and Gordie Howe (209 w/ DET).

* Kucherov, with three points in each of his past three home games, reached the 50-assist mark prior to his 50th game of a season for the third time in his career (also 43 GP in 2018-19 & 47 in 2022-23). He is one of only nine players in NHL history to do so at least three times following Wayne Gretzky (15x), Mario Lemieux (9x), Bobby Orr (6x) Paul Coffey (4x), Denis Savard (4x), Bryan Trottier (4x), Adam Oates (4x) and Peter Stastny (3x).

I really want him to retire here, but if we want to have any chance at another Cup run with this core, I don't see how we aren't better off letting him go. At this point the pay cut would have to be unrealistically significant for it to be worth bringing him back.

That’s the big dilemma here. He should obviously retire in our colors. That’s what he wants, what fans want, what supposedly his team mates and the organization want. But it makes less and less sense when considering roster building and budgets.

In today’s salary cap world it’s a lot more likely that he’ll either have to re-sign at a rate he won’t like in order to stay and keep the team somewhat competitive or walk after the season, uproot his family and eventually end up signing elsewhere going from one short-term deal to another. We’ve seen it with Thornton, Spezza, E. Staal and other former greats.

That said I’m sure there’s a team out there waiting to throw $6M+ AAV and several years at him right now (see Palat, Killorn).

He's a liability on the top two lines, contract aside.

At this point the only way I want him back other than sentimental value is if he takes a deal for around 4m AAV and we demote him to the third line.

This reduces his 5v5 minutes and also gives him easier competition. He'll still get his time on the PP but it'll significantly mitigate the downsides he brings.
