Then why didn't he take it this summer?I think Duchene can get a lot more than that.

Then why didn't he take it this summer?
Even as a business decision, his current contract makes sense. One of the big knocks on Duchene is his lack of playoff experience, which isn't really a fair criticism. He's hopefully going to have a long playoff run this year and finally get a chance to show the league he can elevate his game in the playoffs.
Assuming that does happen, he could easily be looking at another 50M+ contract offer next season. Not from us, ideally, but from someone.
Because the offers guys like him got in the final year of the flat cap were terrible. Tarasenko, Kane, Domi, Bertuzzi, and many more dudes took one year deals this past off-season because the multi-year offers were all for very low AAVs because of how many teams were up against the cap even as free agency opened. Then why didn't he take it this summer?

Yes, because the cap situation limited him to a few low-ball offers. No, he got the offer he got because he was very selective in where he wanted to play.

Not really. The cap situation was a problem before he and the other vets who took one year discount deals hit free agency. He was a victim of being bought out in the single worst offseason for guys to be UFAs.Chicken or egg argument here.
IIRC he also said he was blindsided by the buy-out. May have just taken the first "good" deal he got offered to go to a favorable situation.
Damn, that 2020 Playoff run with Duchene could have been the magic that took us all the way. Although someone probably wouldn’t have been there, if Matt was.he touched on this in the podcast interview, he tried to come to Dallas in 2019 and we told him we couldn’t because of the cap.
