The Russia situation is difficult regarding visiting fans to Kazakhstan, besides Italy I don't think there's another country with as few traveling fans at top level World Championship tournaments and presumably in their case that would go both ways.

I hope we get the tournament after we had to cancel it in 2026. I am still disappointed as I had tickets to all Swiss games as well as QF, SF and the final.
I wonder why not Lausanne again as it was supposed to be in 2020, it is much bigger city than Fribourg with comparable ice hockey tradition.

Is also a matter of arena deals with various operators, sometimes one offer is simply better than the other.

Many people wonder why and are quite annoyed about it, especially since it's been reported that Fribourg had the weakest application. There are rumours that Fasel pushed to have his hometown picked.

Whatever the reason, this tournament was supposed to replace the one that was cancelled in 2026 and in the end it won't. The only sure thing is that I won't be attending this farce.

Yeah I would have expected Lausanne as well. But Fribourg has a phantastic arena with a great athomosphere, so I am ok with it. We also have a new arena in Zurich, so it is 2 different arenas than planned in 2020.

Get over your frustration and go either way. I remember the last one in Kloten, celebrating with the Hungarian fans, just a very nice experience. So don't let politics frustrate you!

I'll be off to my 14th WC later today, I can miss one once in a while.

I know I likely won't be able to resist, but I at most will go to Zurich.

Yeah I know the feeling, in the end the wish to be there will be greater. But enjoy Prag and let's get this gold medal!

No surprise, France being the only candidate. France will host IIHF WC 2028 in Paris and Lyon. Congrats to France.

Wonder who'll make a run for the 2029 and 2030 IIHF WC now?
Some potential candidates could be Austria, Slovakia, Norway and Kazakhstan.

Austria are building a new arena in Wien with place for 20.000 projected to be finished late 2029. Slovakia haven't hosted for a while, but lacks an arena big enough to host the final and semifinals. (Arena>12.000), maybe a joint bid Bratislava/Wien in 2030?

Norway could also be a potential candidate. A new arena in Oslo is projected to be finished by 2028 with place for 14.000. (Unity arena). Bergen or Trondheim for group stage matches.

Kazakhstan maybe, depends on the situation with the war Russia/Ukraine.

Kazakhstan would be ridiculously bad travel-wise especially now, maybe someday if the political situation improves and there's a fast travel link between the cities. Almaty and Astana are currently 15h apart by the fastest train.

I also agree I don't think either the WHCs or Kazakhstan are ready for Kazakhstan hosting yet. International hockey still needs to get into a bit of a rhythm over the next decade with the Olympics and World Cup coming back on a schedule, so getting some really strong hosts like Czechia this year, and then Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany and France in the coming years are fantastic news. Putting this in a place like Belarus (if/when they're ever allowed in) or Kazakhstan just isn't going to help the image or participation of the tournament.

Maybe in the 2030s when things are more established we can see some more up and coming countries getting a look. Austria or Norway possibly are good candidates for 2029/2030?
