I was really happy for Schneider when he got that last NHL game/win a couple seasons back after battling his way back from his hip issues in the AHL for a couple years. Most guys who had earned what he earned would have packed it in years ago rather than try to ride buses to get back to the NHL.
One of the unluckiest careers in NHL history, though. He was utterly elite and Vezina-calibre consistently from 2010-2016 but spent that entire time behind Luongo/platooning Brodeur/stuck on a terrible Devils team. If you put his prime in a different situation, he could have won multiple Vezinas and a Cup.
NYR - Montoya, EDM Dubnyk, STL Schwartz were the 3 goalies taken before Schneider. Aside from EDM which is a true goalie graveyard in terms of development, Cory would have had a similar situation being behind Lundqvist, who is 4 years older, so was 22 when Cory got drafted and 25 by the time Cory turned pro. Would have been traded out of NYR.
Schwartz, never did much in the NHL. STL, over the years from say 2009 (after Cory's first 2 pro years) were:
Chris Mason/Conklin
Halak/Conklin
Halak/Elliott/Bishop
Elliott/Halak/Allen
Halak/Elliott
Add in Miller/Brodeur for a year each befroe really Allen got the job.
So, he would have been the starter in STL most likely from around 2010 or 2011 onwards.
