Personally I think Jon Klingberg covers up for a lot of Lindell's shortcomings, and that he's a fairly typical #4D defense first D. Only problem being that he's not particularly elite at shutting guys down, has zero good transition game to speak of, and you can't really rely on him for much in the offensive zone either. I also don't think Klingberg really needs him, in fact, I think he's an anchor because opposing players know Klingberg will be doing the breakout 95% of the time and can adjust to that. That all being said, he's still got some value, although I think it's closer to something like what Larsson got to play for the Kraken. It's not a perfect analogy (Lindell is more well-rounded), but I think that's the ceiling of value for a guy like Lindell. He's a complementary player being paid like someone who drives play well on his own.
The main thing about Lindell that drives me mad, though, is I think he's overrated around a lot of the league with executives. There was an article mentioning his value on the Athletic a long while back that I'm too lazy to dig up with quotes from anonymous executives valuing him pretty well. It was in one of their hypothetical 'who says no' trade articles. I think he's one of the easiest sell candidates on the entire team because he can be replaced with a cheaper player, AND, I think we would get a premium return for him on top of it. It's a wasted opportunity not to have traded him before the NTC kicked in, and the Stars cap situation has gotten really bad and could use the wiggle room, even if it's only $2-$3M.
