Before the Caps made the loffs for the first time, they won their final game of the 80-81 RS, only to miss the playoffs by a point because TO won as well and took the 16th spot. All of the non-playoff teams lost their RS final, thus making the Caps the only team other than the eventual SC winners to win their final game of the season.
