If we're going to keep Perunovich because of his awesome PP skills, I'd rather just stick him up at forward and have a defenseman who can play defense, who doesn't need to be heavily sheltered, in his defensive spot. It's not even like when Peru is on the power play, he's doing even 50% of what a Cale Makar does. He's "great" at passing the puck around, but he very infrequently shoots and he doesn't have a dangerous shot at all. He's otherwise lousy defensively, and saying "we can shelter him" underscores that. The idea of playing a defenseman 11-12 minutes a game trying to protect him from being treated like a turnstile in his own zone for the 4-5 minutes he might spend on the PP, might be great there, is dumb.
I'm sure in some reinvention of playing roles for a team there's a spot for him - not quite a rover, but something where "when we need to break out on offense he's back with the defense, when the team needs to play defense a forward drops down to do that and he's up front for a quick breakout with his speed - but in 2024, there's not a good position for him.
