I think we all undervalue Rantanen a bit, but he also has some frustrating aspects to his game. If it were at all possibly to acquire some future assets in a trade for him, and sign Guentzel to a long term deal at a comparable number ($8.5m-9.0m) that would be a lateral move which would save money moving forward. Hopefully acquire a top-10/12 pick. I'd then trade Manson, re-sign Walker and your top-6/top-9 is pretty much set.

Drouin - MacKinnon - Guentzel
Landeskog - Mittelstadt - Lehkonen
Wood/x - Colton - LOC
x/Wood - x - Kovalenko

Toews - Makar
Girard - Walker
x - Malinski

At that point you'd have roughly $6mil I'd imagine to fill those remaining three spots.

Not sure where to put this, but he was a legend on Canadian tv.

If nothing else this playoff run has solidified my opinion that the Avs absolutely need to trade Rantanen this offseason. If Nuke is also gone then great - we can keep Drouin, pay a 1A/B goalie to push Georgie, and get/keep some forward depth.

Darren Dutchyshen was a big part of my childhood watching TSN nearly every day. He was always great presenting the sports news and I can easily hear his voice in my head without even trying. That's a real shame that he's gone - way too soon.

I mean the run isn't even over yet. And I wouldn't be surprised if we hear after the season ends (hopefully deep in June) that Rantanen has been dealing with some kind of injury (not the mental kind).

Has he been injured all season, because what I'm seeing from him in the playoffs has been pretty consistent to his play most of the year. If he looked slow and disengaged in every situation, then I might blame it on an injury, but to me he truly looks like a player who just barely helps us more than hurts us, and that ratio will only get worse as he ages.

Oh get real for crying out loud. I'm not against trading Rantanen for cap purposes, and I understand why he has frustrated people especially this reason. But to say "he barely helps us" is just ridiculous.

I'm not talking about the past. I'm talking about now. I'm watching the games, and Mikko doesn't consistently produce offense the way he used to, and his play away from the puck is frequently abysmal. I still think his raw talent keeps him as a net positive, but if he loses a step with age, I expect his play to get really ugly.

A quote from the TSN article about his passing:

"He passed as he was surrounded by his closest loved ones,” the Dutchyshen family said. “His sharp wit remained until his final moments, classically delivering plenty of jokes – most of them pretty good and all of them inappropriate.”

This is why he was awesome.

I agree but these playoffs are the exception. He could even be playing injured.

Ultimately I don't think we can pay 13-14M for him. However whether we want to keep him for next season and let him walk, or trade him, that is an interesting dilemma.

Yep, he could be injured. But I've seen him put in effort in some cases and not in others. That can't be chalked up to an injury. And injury would explain an overall drop in play, but not inconsistent effort.

Posting a picture of how many career playoff points he has isn't an overly effective way to prove that he hasn't been godawful this playoffs.

I don't care if he's won multiple Conn Smythes in the past. If a player is playing like crap now, then that's ultimately what he needs to be judged on and Rants looks like our worst player out there on most nights right now. It's unacceptable.

there's like 3 other threads that made more sense for this topic lol.

But ya sad for Dutchy. Scares the shit out of me that a healthy 58 year old can fall ill and pass so quickly.
