2024 PGA Championship Field
It's once again major week in the world of golf. This time, it's the 106th edition of the PGA Championship, held at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Brooks Koepka is our defending champion, and Rory McIlroy won this event the last time it was contested here at Valhalla in 2014.
Who are the favourites? It seems three men have emerged as the popular picks to win. First, needing no introduction, is world number one Scottie Scheffler, coming in off of a stretch of four win in five starts, including victories at the Masters and the Players. Data Golf's all-time strokes gained rankings suggest Scottie is currently playing at a higher level than anyone over the past 30 years sans the GOAT, and sportsbooks have him as the clear favourite. There is one small hitch - Mr. Scheffler is now a father for the first time, as his newborn son was delivered last week. While this eliminates him from pulling a Hunter Mahan and having to withdraw mid-event to be with his wife, it also means he is likely coming in either gassed or rusty. Will he overcome to claim his second major of the year?
Favourite number two is the aforementioned world number two Rory McIlroy, winner in 2014 at this very course, and coming in off of two victories in a row. Rory has famously not claimed victory at a major in a decade, but sportsbooks are bullish on his chances this time around, with his number being as low as +700. Is this finally his time?
The third popular pick is defending champion Brooks Koepka. Golf's number one killer has won this tournament three times in his career, and had a respectable T15 finish here in 2014 as a green 24 year old, in one of his first major starts. Brooks cruised to victory versus the LIV boys in Singapore in his most recent start two weeks ago. With momentum on his side and a track record of success, can he claim major number six?
Here are the remainder of the favourites, odds via bet365:
Scottie Scheffler +400
Rory McIlroy +700
Brooks Koepka +1200
Xander Schauffele +1200
Jon Rahm +1400
Ludvig Aberg +1800
Max Homa +2200
Bryson DeChambeau +2500
Collin Morikawa +2800
Joaquin Niemann +2800
Michael Block +150000
Anything that stands out?
