He had a really bad start. Horrible even. He's been picking it up bit by bit the past few games though.
To me it seems he's been trying to play a more defensive role. He hasn't been rushing the puck as much, and he hasn't been pinching as often.
Whether it's confidence or the new systems, he's not as involved in the offensive play. Chances are it will change with time, but for now, defense is his focus it seems.

Is that what you call he's trying to do out there? Okay then.
I have a feeling Quinn really tightened the leash on certain players. For the majority of the season so far Gilbert has taken very few offensive risks. Hemsky is the other who often seems to be playing...castrated. I seem to recall Quinn saying to the media he doesn't like the pretty stuff.
he didn't play great last season either, haven't been impressed with him for a while and honestly am starting to wish the oilers dealt him in the offseason when his value was high
To me it looks like they've asked Gilbert to play more of a stay at home defenseman role and gave Grebs the leash to take chances. This looks to have put Gilbert out of his comfort zone and he's really not able to play his game that way. I don't like the chemistry mix between Grebs and Gilbert either they aren't reading the play terribly well off of one another. Suffice to say regardless of chemistry or the "ideal role" Gilbert should and can play a lot better than he has, I expect more from him.

Case and point on why he should never be paired with Gerbeshkov again. They looked great together down the stretch a year and 1/2 ago, but since then they've been a nightmare together due to the fact they try to play the same style.
Was Souray hurt when Gilbert scored most of his points last year? If I recall correctly only 1/2 of his points were on the PP. He still put a lot of point up when playing 5on5.

Souray played 81 games last year. I really don't know how many points Gilbert got off of Souray's bombs, and I don't think it would be much larger than 10. Just a ****ty assumption on my part. But I still think Gilbert sucks.
Like Quinn said, a lot of our young players are still learning about themselves. Gilbert is working on his defensive game and trying to add a physical element. He will be fine, him and Grebs will come out of this slump better than ever.

Don't know for sure either, but I do remember after Lubo went down that Grebs got the vast majority of 1st unit PP time with Shelly.
As far as Gilbert and Grebs poor play to start the year, could it not have something to do with Huddy's departure? I still have no idea how the Oil decide to keep one assistant from last year and choose the eyebrowless wonder over Huddy????
I think pairing him with a more defensive dman will allow him to pinch a lot more efficiently. Remember his first few years in the league when he scored all those goals around the net? That was my favourite version of Tom Gilbert. Back then he was even pretty good defensively. This year Grebeshkov and him have been bad defensively.
