Well he jumped on the ice before the other player got on the bench. In fact the two players going back to the bench went back in the brawl after so you had 6 of them on the ice (including Okposo). Not that I have anything against it, the guy defended one of his teammates while trying to make a name for himself.
Yeah... but that happens on any line change. That's why there's a buffer zone where you can't touch the puck but it's not too many men.

He drove his shoulder into Okposo's head. That's not clean.
Wow, the hit definitely wasnt clean. Not sure how people can say it was. Take off the homer glasses and realize that he jumped into the hit to cause more damage. I am a Rangers fan and I can tell you that was dirty and I hope someone does the same to Phaneuf before the end of the game because we all know he will play like a ***** afterwards.

This was a little more obvious but back in the day when there would be a brawl between the Oilers and Flames, Sather would sneak another player on ice so they were out numbered. The refs could never tell.

His feet were on the ice when contact was made. He exploded into the hit. Clean as can be.
Ill-intentioned? Sure. Against the rules? Not at all. Dirty? Depends on your definition.
Definitely was clean as per the rules of the NHL, though.

actually I've read posts from Ottawa fans, Columbus, Montreal.. the general consensus seems to be that it was not completely clean.
Wait until it processes. Someone else can get a better youtube with replays. Here's the hit without sound or replays:
You see Morency jump right out of the middle of the bench onto the ice and make a beeline for Phaneuf with his back turned and Giordano races over to intercept him. What's the fuss with Phaneuf not taking care of business? Giordano is just trying to stop Morency from getting Phaneuf from behind and slows down Morency who bounces through two players to Phaneuf who ends up grappling with Morency right after anyway.

So much for Phaneuf not 'fighting'. I know that doesn't really count. But people are going on as if Dion stood idley by while the rest of his teammates scrummed over what he did. And if he doesn't fight it shouldn't matter because he doesn't have to prove his fighting skills, as that's not the type of player he is.
Oh and just though i should add this: earlier in that period before the hit, Haley or whatever took a run at our top-young player, Mikael Backlund, and Olli Jokinen dropped the gloves to fight him. Star players should only fight if one of THEIR teammates gets hurt.

Okposo lost the puck but it looked like he still had it the way the play went on, also it shows Phaneufs "fight" afterwards for those who said he didnt stick up for himself after the hit. Not much of a fight, but still, he served the major. Hit was clean.
Just because Phaneuf fell to the ice as well, it doesn't mean he left his feet to initiate the hit.
Okposo tries to skate through two defenders plus a backchecking forward while cutting across the middle with his head down. Thats suicide. If anything he skated into Dion. The hit's a good one.
And as for the fighting thing? Phaneuf doesn't need to prove anything or answer to some unhinged scrub for simply playing the game.

Phaneuf had several opportunities to drop the mittens, and I somehow doubt he didn't hear the guy screaming at him on his way over.

He would have, but that Islander's player grabbed Phaneuf, so he had to do something, or get his face below his visor pounded in.
