I have a gut feeling its gonna be less then 3 million a season on average.
this is a loophole that's gonna have to be addressed in the future, but good on Detroit. They already paying for other teams to be "competitive." Teams that make money, and have the ability and commitment from players to do this should be able to.
this deal with out a NTC and a low hit is a non-factor.
So long as it doesn't have a NMC, it's fine.
Considering the fact that Franzen is 29, has had some injury history and plays a pretty rough game on occasions, I could see his play slipping in his mid thirties. If it doesn't have a NMC, they can stick him in the minors and be done with it so long as they're willing to eat the contract.
should also add, and fueling that "loophole scenario"
hes almost 30. He probably has 5-6 years in him. Is this any different then signing him to a 4-5 year deal? He retires, the money comes off the books.
If this was a 5 year 15 million deal people would be ecstatic. Any different with a 9 year 28 (just throwing numbers) Deal with out a NTC/NMC?

Its not gonna shock me if this is less then 3 million on average. The guy has said recently he would take less to remain on a winner.
its a loophole, no doubt. But it also takes commitment from the players as well as an Owner willing to pay a guy if he retires early and a GM with a knack of keeping players and running a successful team.
Detroit has that all.
*EDIT* Now, that said. If this turns out to be a 5 million a year deal.... Ya all my comments, toss em out the window, lol.
Well it's a sort of a "career" contract (if true) as you say, I highly doubt he be around that long. But you never know, if Ta-chucky can then maybe Franzen?
As someone say he has been a little bit of a injury record (not too much), so at 35 or so he could well be finished, but again that will only time tell for sure.
Why? If both the team and player agree to a long contract what's the problem?
Exactly. Having both sides agree on contracts like this isn't easy. So, there's no need to re-open or revisit the CBA. The Wings aren't in the same situation as most teams, so these are isolated cases.
