Let me get this right.....Don Cherry of all people (with his flashy suits and loud mouth) is calling somebody out for showboating and drawing attention to themselves?

Altho, Ovy might have taken it too far with his "chicken dance" at Crosby,sometimes he seems like a character out of Monty Pythhon, other times he just looks like a guy who really enjoys hockey.
And seriously, we need more people who act like Sakic and Thornton? Both are class acts, especially Sakic, but he is so boring I think i'd develop narcolepsy if he was talking to me. Ovechkin i'd just want to give a straightjacket and a shot of valium.

By that logic, so does humble Canadian boy Crosby for his whininess. Still, though I completely have no respect for Cherry's hockey analysis, the guy has a place in hockey. He's a TV shock jock of hockey and guys like him are interesting for their controversial nature. The problem is, HNIC lets his voice be the only one and we don't get the more progressive, anti-goonery voice be heard. Both sides of thr argument should be given due time, not just one. But anyway, Cherry shouldn't be removed from the air for being a xenophobic quack. Hell, that's why he's even on TV anymore! People stopped investing in his hockey opinions and knowledge years back. His coaching style is still his basis for opinion and he last coached in 1980 so it's quite clearly a dated one.

Considering that nobody has ever done a thing to him yet, when exactly is this long overdue payback going to occur? People have been saying the same thing about Kovalchuk since he came in the decade.

Some yahoos started a big petition. It could have been done for anyone. If I had the time, I'm sure I could've started one to get Tom Green in the list and it would work or to take a more visible, popular figure Bryan Adams (hey his music is lame but he is a big time star like Don). It was inevitable when they came out with that contest. But it was a TV one voted on by the people, so it was more a popularity contest than an actual educated poll.

Cherry can't handle the fact that Ovechkin plays a tougher and more physical game than most Canadians do.
Most players in the league like his enthusiasm because they realize that he's not rubbing it in, he's just celebrating and having a good time. In an age where athletes get tagged with only being in it for the money, it's refreshing to see someone who enjoys the game as much as Ovechkin.

I don't disagree that Cherry is a dumbass and has an obvious distaste for non-Canadians, but on this particular issue he takes issue with what he deems to be "hot dogging" regardless of who does it.

He has an obvious distaste for non-Canadians, yes, but there are also things that he just plain hates, and will rant about regardless of who is doing them.
Soccer players celebrate they way they do for the most part because in soccer 1 goal, even early in the game, can mean the difference of winning and losing moreso than in hockey where 1 goal doesn't guarantee as much.
Sure some of the celebrations we abit overboard but most of the soccer cellys are not much different from one where a hockey players scores a big OT goal.
Besides I like Ovy's celly's. They make him look like a fun, laid back person.

OK I know you are referring to the network, but its just Cherry who stands alone on this one.
He's funny. The programming director of CBC sports Scott Moore was giving us a guest lecture on Wednesday and said he was going to put Don on a 7 minute delay because it takes him 7 minutes to get from his apartment to CBC so he can fire him.
For anyone who doesn't know Scott, he's the guy responsible for losing the HNIC theme.
