he has struggled a bit since leaving the Oilers....seems his heart is not in it.. Just wonder how fellow Oiler fans would feel if we re-acquired Smytty
say roli and pouliot/brodz for smytty...as it looks like Col will need a goaltending upgrade..
with all the talk of chemistry early this season there is no doubt that Smyth-Horc-Hemmer had IT..maybe our 2nd best line since the glory days(smyth-weight-guerin).
taking a look at the cap a roli for smyth trade does fit this year, next yr we only have garon..grebs..smid...maybe cole to resign, but unlikly...and the only cap increase is horc's 1.9...granted the cap could go down
yes I know let it go...Smyth is gone and will never be back and the 6.25 cap hit is to big and we would rather have kovalchuk but just curious
Love the man, and his heart, but his agent screwed him out of ever playing for the Oilers again. I might trade Roli for him straight up, but with that salary, he just doesn't bring enought to the team. At least Roli's salary leaves us at the end of the year... Smyths keeps going for another 3... Sucks to be the Avs with that one.
I wanted him back after we traded him... but its done..
Who would we have to bup down to fit him...
I like the lines as is...
Unless he can win faceoffs
Penner or one of the kids end up on the 4th line with Brodz or Pouliot...thing is the contract works for this and next yr...but once the kids need a raise we may have to move 1 of smyth, souray, vish, penner
If there was no salary cap, sure I'd take him. But because there is, there's no way for it to work.
Smyth's $6+ million would make it impossible to give Garon a raise next summer, or whoever it is we have in net, unless we go with Deslauriers as the no.1, which isn't happening anytime soon.
You can't keep Smyth, Penner, and Cole all at the same time either, that's almost $15 million in salary between those players and you want to put a guy with $4 million on your 4th line, lol. That's impossible to do with the current salary cap.

Not to reign on anyone's parade, but I don't think this statement is all that accurate.
Last season, as he was decimated by various different injuries, naturally, not much should be expected from him since he never found a good groove. However, it's worth noting that when he was in the lineup during the postseason, he was arguably the most consistent Av forward.
This young current season he's found great chemistry with Stastny and Hejduk. Right now the entire team is struggling, as is the top line, but we really saw flashes of greatness amongst the three scorers early on. And even though Smyth might have slowed down since the first week or so of the season on the scoresheet, he's still bringing a premium effort every night and continues to create chances. At this point I'd be hard pressed to say his "heart isn't in it." He's doing fine, and I suspect he'll continue to do fine.

Anyways, that's all.
Well for your teams sake I hope at the very least he brings a premium effort as the guy is being paid a very premium rate for the talent that he has. I am glad that Sakic lured him there and then almost retired after one season.

All things considered, I have no qualms about the contract he signed. We had the money, we needed a shot in the arm, and his style of play is one that the team has been lacking since Adam Deadmarsh was dealt in early 2001. The market is what it is, and if you can't home grow talent to fit the holes that your team has, you're going to have to pay top dollar to attempt to fill those holes through free agency. I feel similarly about Hannan's contract, though he hasn't been as good of a fit as Smyth IMO.
yes it was a rumour on the team this morning...smyth for Roli and Brodz
and for the record the salaries work this yr and if cole leaves in the off season then that 4 mill is used to up Garon and grebs.......we may have to move a big salary in 2 yrs to get Gagner and Cogs under contract...but that is 2 yrs from now

As much as I like Smytty, it just doesn't make sense, ... cents wise.
I would rather have Cole and Roloson than Smyth's 6.25 million. Both Cole And Roli are off the books next year, while Smyth is around for 3 more years (right?)
The real question should be Cole or Smyth? Would it be possible to re-sign Cole to a contract that is cheaper than Smyth's contract?
I was one of the very few on this board who wasn't up in arms over the trade, I used to love Smyth until he came out and said he wasn't taking a hometown discount anymore (when he was payed market value his previous contract), and then when I found out he wouldn't budge on 100k when we were already offering him 5.4 million that was the nail in the coffin.
Then of course theres his crying escapade only to come very close to signing with out biggest rival which was a big slap in the face to the fans and his former teammates.
Thanks for the memories, but no thanks to coming back. We can always get someone else to score goals off their nose, elbow, shins, cod piece, yadda yadda. That canoe has portaged over the Rockies and the Oilers are a much better team for it. One of the only really sound decisions Lowe made.
I'd do Smyth for Roli and Brodziak IF we signed Cole longterm for $5 million-ish AND we traded Penner for some solid picks/prospects. There isn't room on this team for Smyth, Cole, and Penner.
I for one don't miss Smyth, but if we can strengthen our team (multiple deals), then why not???

Yeah, on second thought he can stay in Colorado, he would've been loved here for a little less, let him catch **** in Colorado for being a greedy little *****. Everytime I see a guy taking a hometown discount, I think of how much of a greedy son of a ***** #94 was.

Unless the economy turns around quickly I think the chances of Cole getting $6 M are pretty slim. In fact, he may be hard pressed to break $5M. Even if the cap stays where it is there just isn't that much free money to go around.
The rise in the cap last year put roughly $192 M of new money into salaries. This meant a lot of dough to give out raises and to compete for FA's. But there is likely no new money there this year. In fact, we could well see a contraction. Once teams take care of their own cores there will be surprisingly little money left for FA's.
I would take my chances on seeing if/when Atlanta has to move Kovalchuk or even Gaborik.
Truth is we ourselves are probably headed to cap trouble as is with Gagner and Cogliano up after next season and the long term salaries of Horcoff, Penner, Visnovsky, Gilbert, etc. on the books. At least the positive is that the only guys on our team with NTCs are Souray and Horcoff, and Souray's NTC is up when Gagner/Cogs are due, while Horcoff's doesn't kick in until next July 1st.
We are going to have to spend some money on goaltending too, people act like we can just clear Roli's salary ... that may be fine for the rest of this year but after that?
You're going to have to pay Garon the same money Roli was making if not more.
If we are going to take on another big long-term contract it has to be a game breaking 1st line player that can play with Hemsky. You really have to look at our cap situation not just for this year but for the next 3 years.
