Hey guys, I don't usually post threads but I figured this is worth to share.
I am a huge hockey card collector and I usually buy a pack a week (usually from Wal-Mart or Zellers). Anyways, this week I did my usual thing where I buy a pack (bought a 2 pack of cards for 6 bucks Be A Player 97-98 pack) and inside I was very lucky to find 3 Autographed cards in it! Rob Brown, Mikhail Shtalenkov Rookie card, and a Chris Allen Rookie Card. I know the names aren't very familiar (Especially Chris Allen cuz he only played in the NHL for 2 games ) but I figured I'd let you all know that sometimes when you buy cards in Walmart or Zellers that are 10 years old, you might luck out and find an autographed card

Did that once and I also came out with a Chris Allan autographed card, but i think the coolest card I ever got out of a pack was a 1993 Classic autographed Manon Rheaume card.
I never buy cards but I decided to buy a pack at a 7-11 one time when I filled up and when I opened it I found a Joe Thornton game used signed card! you never know what you will find.
I buy cards at the local shop but it's closing at the end of August. No!!!!!!
I bought this card for a $1000. It may seem like a lot but it was a good deal. I got it for cheap from a person that I know from the card message boards. He got it for that price and didn't want to charge me more then what he paid for it. I bought it because it was a Nash card.
and on the back side
Certificate of Authenticity
Here's the rest of my Rick Nash collection. Thoughts?
*Whats funny is Edmonton is my fav team while Columbus is my other fav team(technically 2nd and only because of Nash) but I have no player collection of any Oiler while I have 3 from the Jackets.(Nash, Norrena, and Boll) I also collect Franzen.
The Cup came out last week or so. For 4 to 6 cards, you would pay around $300/$400. I havn't boughten any. I was going to but the bank computers were down and couldn't take money out. It was a sign/karma because I have rule about taking $ from my bank account.

There was a time Eric Lindros rookie cards were worth 40 bucks. Growing up I had 2 of them. Now that he's retired I have over 200 of them, and probably spent a grand total of 30 bucks getting them.
I like hockey cards, but as an investment, take the chances online trading stocks.

1st off, all my Nash cards are for my personal collection rather then a investment.
2nd off, I agree, if I were to sell it down the road, I wouldn't get $1000 back.(maybe $500to $750 if I'm lucky) Especially with Upper Deck flooding the card industry with 1/1 auto shields. What was original is becoming unoriginal.
3rd, even if my card goes down in price. I'm the ONLY person to own that specific card.
4th, dude, we're talking about Nash. He'll eventually have a huge season(this season..knock on wood) and will continue to have a great career making him a hall of a famer. All the card collectors will jump on his bandwagon and will pay massive money for his cards. Kind of like Gretzky cards. *note, I'm being sarcastic....or am I?(hey if you talk highly of Lindros, then I could do the same with Nash)
*collecting cards now is totally different from back in the day(Lindross rookie card days) Back then, packs were what, $5. Now some goes from $2 to $20 to $150 to $400. So buying cards is more expensive now adays. I bet you, if you would have boughten Lindros rookie cards now a days. It would cost you from $10 to $200(depending on the set. If you bought a $5 pack it would be worth $10. If you bought the $400. It would be $200) this is my guess.

You agreed with everything I said. Except for the idea a Rick Nash card will go up if he has a monster season. My Lindros collection (a guy that actually won a Hart Trophy) is probably combined worth less than your one Nash investment.

Do what you want.
like I said, it's my hobby. I get the same reaction that I got from you from my parents/friends/ppl I work with. But like I also said, card collecting now a days is much different from back then(companies are doing stuff to charge us more making the cards more expensive) You think I spend a lot of money. You should see the collectors on the message board I go to. I've seen ppl spend $5000 on a card. I've seen them opening cases(x5) of the Cup(highest brand from Upper Deck) which would have cost them $10,000.
Personally I'd rather spend 800 bucks on a game worn autographed Rick Nash jersey, than 1000 on a card with a swatch.
The people on the boards you talked to - should have probably spent the 5000 bucks to buy a game worn Wayne Gretzky jersey from 1987 as he hoisted the Stan.
But hey, a 1 inch square swatch in a card 1/1 or 1/100 card is just as valid...
Theres a Everything For a Dollar Store at Kingsway that used to have decent cards.
Got a Modin Jersey Card, Hartnell Autograph Card and my prized NJ Scott Neidermeyer Jersey/Autograph Card.
I also got a Hemsky Calder Contender Card.
Right now they have a pretty crappy collection(old school like card board pre-93), just need enough people to buy them, so they can restock with a new collection.

Dude relook at that ebay ad. Nobody purchased that card at that price. People made offers that were declined several times. But nobody bought it because it is not worth it.
Currently I am collecting all the mini oiler retirement banners and including a rookie card of each player so that I can put together the peices in a picture frame. Of course I am not gonna pitch out the money to buy the actual gretzky or messier rookie card but rather pick up the 10 year anniversay card for 1% of the price. If I can use my sources to land a few autographs on the peices I bet I sell the entire collection framed for over $500. The entire collection will probably have costed me $200 to put together in the end (that includes framing).
I understand you are a Nash fan, but paying $1000 for a hockey card is ridiculous. Like Duke said you should ahve invested your money in a autographed game worn jersey or stick.
I owned/operated a trading card store from 1993-1999 and let me say that they're only "investments" if you get them as a steal. I flipped everything I could as fast as possible and the only things that retain long term value (usually) are older packs of cards (note: pre 90s).
I still have enough cards in boxes put aside to choke a horse, most worthless, some worth a fair bit if you go by "book value". Just waiting for the craze to re-ignite full-force to get rid of 'em all.
If I were investing in any memorabilia it would be game worn jerseys, pucks, sticks, autos etc. For instance, I recently won an autographed framed Wayne Gretzky's Final Game picture/plaque from MSG - WG Authentic #13/199 at a silent charity auction.
Too bad there is no competition in the NHL trading card industry. Seems like most of Upper Decks product is weak. Remember before Topps stopped making the "Pristine" set for the NHL? I think I might have 98% of that series. Good scores in that series were the mini goalie cards, one auto by JS giguere and the rare sealed rookies, couple of fleury's.
What is the Cup? a special series?
Couple of things I want to say again.... Raoul Duke Like I said, this is my hobby and the card was for my collection, not a investment. I don't plan on selling my Nash cards, ever. Buying a game worn jersey is the better investment but I don't collect game jerseys. If I wanted one, I would buy one. (same as the ppl on the other board, they collect cards, not jerseys. I'm sure they have enough cash to buy a couple though). Also, if I were to re sell that card NOW, I could make a couple hundred in profit but I would have to sell it now and not later. Hey, but who cares. I'm happy with my purchases and you're happy with your Lindros cards that you were able to get for cheap.
Reimer Look at the auction again. The auction ended with the buy it now which was $3,999. Look at the top page. SO yes, there are crazier collectors then me. Also, like I said to Raoul, I collect cards and not jerseys.(even if means it's better to buy jerseys then cards) Good luck with the project, make sure to post a pic when it's all done.
BandwagonBasherYes, the Cup is a series. Back in the day, it was just Upper Deck,Topps/OPC, and Fleer. Upper Deck owns the names for OPC and Fleer and they're the only company that can use the NHL names. Upper Deck wants to make $$$$ so they come out with different series each year. Here are some examples, Black Diamond, Artifacts, SPX, Victory, OPC Premier, and Ultimate Collection. Prices range in each series. If the packs are expensive, the cards are worth more. If they're cheap, they're worth little.

When the hockey card boom happened---everyone started hording the cards and that is why the market is sluggish

I think it was moreless the opposite, the card companies over-produced and the collectors saw that cards in the early 90's went down in terms of value. Now the monopolistic card company is sort of doing the opposite by limiting the production of individual cards. I hope they don't overdo it with the number of types of cards though because then they'd be making the same mistake as before.
Punk_o_holic, that Nash card is sweet. Can't get much better than a 1 of 1. It was from the 07-08 year, right?
So Evil Oilers 666, you just buy those random packs from Zellers that are sitting in electronics? Ive always considered buying them, because its just so fun opening new packs of any kind of cards. I just wasnt sure if there would be ANYTHING at all interesting in the packs. If this is the case that could make a fun weekly investment.
Just recently I bought a full box of unopened packs of GI Joe cards from the early 90s. Me and a couple friends just sat around with a couple beers for a night and opened them up, man that brought back good memories.
climbingbill-no, it was from 06/07 but originally it was a redemption. The card was redeemed not to long ago. I think the original owner received it, 2 months ago or so.
ozhensonbuying loose packs at Zellers, Wal Mart, 7 Eleven isn't the greatest thing. Some ppl pack search(bring in scale..yes they actually do this, bend the packs, etc. They do this because you can get the jersey cards easily) If your buying it from a new box, all is it good though. Also, blaster or retail = harder to get good stuff such as auto's and jersey cards. Do get a better chance to get the special cards, go get a hobby box.
