Philip McRae?

Do you think he was a good pick at 33rd overall for St. Louis? How does he project in the NHL and does anyone have a scouting report on him?

I was a bit skeptical about the pick at the time, but he looked good at the prospect camp/game. It's hard to tell right now, just a couple weeks after the draft, but so far, I think its a fine pick.

Ok cool. I was just curious to see what some St. Louis fans thought. I never thought he would have been picked that high but maybe Kekalainen and other scouts like Basil McRae see something in him. I just hope they didn't select him that high because of his father.

99.9 % sure that his last name had nothing to do with it. The Blues aren't in the position to do anyone favors when it comes to drafting players.

People forget McRae was ranked fairly highly a year ago. Now, rankings do change over time, and they aren't the end-all-be-all, but I do think the McRae was ranked highly for good reason. His season with London last year wasn't spectacular, but it wasn't bad either. We'll see how he does next year, but it'll be exciting following this kid's progress over the next couple of seasons.

If he gets consistent playing time with London this season, any questions about whether this was a good pick or not will go out the window very quickly.

I think his skills/size package is in the "ballpark" of the other players chosen in the 30-40 range. There are always a lot of variables that come into play as to whether or not players reach their potential. I think it was a reasonable pick. Whether or not it pans out remains to be seen. Let's wait at least 3 years (5 might even be better). I think his stats will be fine next season, with a lot more playing time.

Just a little side note. I was in Ottawa for the draft. Did anyone else notice McCrae was givin a jersey with his dad's #17 on it when he was drafted? I thought that was pretty cool.
