NHL Central Scouting's Al Jensen
Quote:
"Number one he is very confident. He is very strong in his crease and he isn't predictable. His net coverage is very good and he reads the play well. I think he presents himself very well in the net and he has very good goalie instincts. He is very consistent which is a big positive for him. He is able to put any bad goals behind him; he doesn't let anything bother him yet he is very competitive. The first time I saw Pickard, I saw Olaf Kolzig – I saw him big time in there."
Tri-City head coach Don Nauchbaur
Quote:
"Chet has done a really good job of being Chet Pickard ... he's a much calmer goalie than he was say, a year and a half ago. He doesn't waste a lot of movement and he's learned to use his size and I think he emulates a lot of what Carey (Price) did in net."
From TSN
Quote:
Some call him a clone of Carey Price because the two used to be teammates in Tri-City. Unquestionably, there are similarities in terms of their size, style and calm under fire demeanor. Rated as a leading contender to be Canada's No. 1 goalie at the upcoming World Juniors, Pickard is considered the clear No. 1 choice as this year's top goaltender in the draft. Some scouts also think he resembles another former Tri-City goalie, Olaf Kolzig, who is now a part-owner of the team.

I have to say, I've never seen him play, but Pickard really intrigues me.
Can someone give me the scoop on Eberle? I see a lot of people voted for him.I went with Pickard. People say we do poorly when we pick a goalie, but show me a defensman that we did a good job with.

Strengths: "With the great Staal family reputation and the high expectations brought on by his brothers, Jared is coming into his own – he's just growing into his 'big Staal body', which is very similar to that of his brothers. He comes off the wing with the desire to go to the net and that, I think, will continue to grow and he's going to continue to develop on into the NHL." Outlook: "We caution to not weigh (the family name) too heavily. I think it's a factor that should be brought in, but how far into the inner ring do you bring it? Visually, genetically, he looks like (his brothers). He's got his summer time with his brothers where he is going to get a depth of advice that other prospects aren't going to get. And that's significant. In my mind he's right where he should be (with his development) and he'll continue to gain experience in Sudbury."
From TSN
Quote:
The name is instantly recognizable and whatever the future holds for the fourth and youngest of the Staal brothers (Eric, Marc and Jordan), he'll have a tough time measuring up to his elder siblings. But scouts were flabbergasted that he tested as poorly as he did at the Central Scouting Combine. Still, there is considerable interest and while some suggested he might get first-round consideration, there are more who believe he's better suited as a third-round pick.

I agree that it will be more of a bad pick to take him in the first round than a bust for himself, its not his fault some team might draft him just because of his name.

I saw Jared play in Sudbury in Dec and he played an excellent game versus Brampton. He was the best player on the ice, he also scored I think 10 seconds into the game (split the D - beauty goal). Sudbury was dead last at the time and Brampton in first in it's division, I believe.
Next year he'll be playing with John McFarland, who is a candidate to go #1 in the NHL entry draft in 2010 (he was #1 in the past OHL draft) and a one year older Marcus Foligno and Eric O'Dell (who will go as high as the 2nd round this year). So he def has a good supporting cast to improve next year and of course his brothers for guidance.

Strengths: "Jordan is a slippery scorer with great hands. He has NHL hands and the skating to get him into good shooting position. Jordan is an up-and-down the wing 'tease' in the sense that sometimes he'll look like he's just going up and down the wing and you have him slotted as a checker and then he'll cut in off the wing and use that shot to put his team up by a goal." Areas to improve: "He needs to improve a little bit on his consistency, in that sometimes his up and down game gets too frequent and he has to learn that all his good skills can't be hidden – he has to use them more often."
Regina Pats head coach Curtis Hunt
Quote:
"He has pure skill, is a gifted scorer, and will compete in tough areas to get it done."

Quote:
"He's our No. 1 sniper. He's a very gifted puck handler and has great finish around the net. I think he's got a lot better playing both ways. He was fortunate last year to have played with older guys and this season he's become one of the older guys. He plays in all situations because he's learning to play better defensively and he's still getting the points."
From TSN
Quote:
A somewhat under-sized centre, Eberle is considered one of the smartest offensive players in the draft. He is a better goal-scorer than a playmaker and is an elusive talent when he has the puck. There are some questions about his speed, but he does have quickness, especially in tight situations and one-on-ones.

I've read that there aren't any 1st round worthy goalies available, and that there are 3 or 4 possible 1st round goalies, so who knows? But, what's definite is that we need at least one top goalie prospect in our system, if not a couple, so with the Flyers track record of drafting (no not goalies), in general, I'd like to see if they can get proactively lucky by picking one of these goalies to be our future, to replace Biron in 2-3 years."

"I think it is going to take Joe a bit of time to develop into the player that he can be because of the league he is playing in is maybe at a lower caliber than the other leagues. He is very rangy with his stick; he dishes the puck well and has really good on-ice awareness. If he can get his skating a little more energetic, he'll be a big strong player down the middle. When he is at his best he is a strategic player, I wouldn't classify him as a power-forward, he is very smart and his positioning is very good; he knows where to be and where to go at the right time."
Camrose Kodiaks' head coach and GM Boris Rybalka

The big playmaking centre from the Jr. A Camrose Kodiaks bears an uncanny resemblance to Joe Thornton on and off the ice, but is something of a draft wild card. His size and playmaking ability could push him into the top 15 of the draft, but his game is still so raw and unpolished that he could go for a slide. Colborne is also fighting a reputation as one of the softer players in this draft. Clearly, a project, but with some excellent assets.

I find him to be equally adept at the defensive game as well as the offensive game, yet I find him to be more closely aligned with an offensive defenseman-type player." Outlook: "Tyler projects as a team's second or third defenseman, with the offensive flare. He's probably best teamed with a defensive, stay-at-home defensemen that gives him that green light. Pickard or Cuma would be awesome!!! I will be watching Homer and his visits to other tables during the draft closely which I will report here about tomorrow night.
Crap, he included my post making fun of the guy who wanted to draft Markstrom (because his name ended with -strom) in with the analysis for drafting Staal.
kick ass job on the thread. i dont know anything about any of these guys and the chances are i've never heard of the player the flyers will draft tomorrow but in homer i trust!
