Maxim Lapierre

What do you guys think about him?? I think eventually he's going to have to start dropping the gloves a little bit more if he's going to keep running his mouth off like that. He's always getting under the other players skin but he's never willing to drop when they get in his face, guys like bouillon have to do that for him...

I think overall he's a good player and he can become kind of a neil or maybe even a tucker, but he's gonna have to fight because he's starting to get a reputation and eventually goons will take runs at him.

Thoughts?

Unless he starts dropping the gloves to me all he is another Marko Ruutu... nothing but a waste of a roster spot

Well he either has to start dropping the gloves once in a while or start scoring goals and putting up points. We have enough players on the team that under-achieve....we don't need anymore.

I like Laps because he is a pest and he is a decent hockey player, but if he's not going to put up points or drop the gloves...then what good is he???

He's a good skater with poor hands. He gives good body checks and chews the ears of opposing players. I'm happy he's dropped the gloves once recently.

He's +6. What that tells me is he rarely puts the team in trouble. I really can't say the same thing about other energy players on the team...

Comment of the day.

If Lapierre or any other player can do the job defensively, win his battle along the boards, be strong on the forecheck, while hitting and scoring occasinally, he's a useful player in the NHL.

Scoring is only good if you can score more than the other team while you are on the ice.

His revenge...

His revenge hit on big Thornton was great.
He seems to play with an even better "edge" the last few games.

I think a like him better on the wings because he can forecheck better.
Speaking of forechecking, am I one of very few that misses Perezhogin's forechecking game ?
His combinations of speed and smarts made him a dangerous forechecker.
If we really intend to roll 3 offensive line that are also defensively responsible and forecheck hard, having him back would be great.

It's in his hands. The Habs would take him back, but is he willing to take a significant drop in salary?

He's an agitator. It's his job to get people mad at him. Hence, the yapping. He doesn't have to fight everyone that's mad at him. That would negate his role. It's not really annoying when you get angry at a guy, then see him get beat up. He's like a less-skilled Claude Lemieux or an Esa Tikkanen (how many times do you remember him scrapping?) Getting filled in by an opposing player rarely helps your team.

Monday's game was one of Lappy's best this year. He had the mouth running off. Got Thornton and Rivet mad at him and for some reason got Ron Wilson to play Shelley with Thornton. Plus he scored a goal. That is an excellent game for this type of player.

He's been great ever since moving to the wing, he has less responsibilities therefore he can agitate more and throw his weight around more.

Why should Laps absolutely HAVE to drop the gloves? I mean he's there to bring energy to the team and get the other guy's to take penalties while theyre trying to get back at him. This way we can use our power play and win games. And IF he scores, thats an added bonus. The only time i say he has to fight is to go to the help of a teammate who just got roughed up.

I agree. That shift against jersey confirmed the same to me. I love the idea of a Begin-Lapierre-Lats/Kosto line in the playoffs.

Are people expecting 25 goals from him?

Since coming back up he has worked a lot on his defensive game. Since a week or so ago he has started to be more "pesty" again. Last game he was mouthing off all the time and hitting anyone in sight. His offensive game will come in time I think, for now he has to focus on his main role, and learning it well.

I agree. He will pot a few goals and create a few opportunities as he develops.

I like his game, more of the same that's posted. I prefer him on the wing and would really like to see him on a line with Begin.

I don't think he needs to drop the gloves more often but think it's more effective for a player in his mold to pick their spots. Loosing a fight would give another team momentum as a lot of teams would like to see him get beat-up and that would be a pick-up of sorts. So he's best served to fight the Talbots of the world, make sure he wins, continue the churping, physical play, and good defence.

He's been very good of late. It's the best he's played in his 2-years.

He has been playing well, winning battles against the boards, hitting and scoring, standing up to Gorges lately, he has also fought Talbot recently. Anyway, I got nothing bad to say of him as I think he has done an admirable job within his role. Keep up the good work Lapierre!

I love what he is bringing to the club right now. Speed, decent forecheck and a bit more grit against the best player. If he could do what he did to thornton each night, I would be more than happy

Anyone surprised how hard Thornton flew? I didn't think it was possible for midget Laps to take down giant Joe like that.

Thornton 6'4 235
Lapierre 6'2 200

It's not like this is Bouillon versus Chara.

I think Lappiere is and will be a good 3rd/4th line agitator with some decent finish around the net.

That said, there is no way he should be playing centre. He doesn't have the hockey IQ or vision to be playing centre in the NHL. If he simplifys his game to a north/south winger, I think he could be a pretty productive Hab for a long time.

Since when is getting the other team pissed at Lapierre a bad thing? When they are worried about Lappy they are less concerned about Markov Kovy Plek and co...That's the whole point of players like that...

I really like Lapièrre, he's young and has all the time to become a good pest... We need one.

I see a futur Avery in him.

No. Every goal Lapierre scores is a plus.
No matter how much he scores. That is not his primary target.

I think Lapierre can be a solid asset to this team long term in the 3rd and 4th line banger/pest/checking line type player that kills penalities and can chip in 10-15 goals a year in his prime. It seems every day there comes a thread where the Habs have to get rid of somebody, this is getting old. Guys like Lapierre Latendresse Smolinski Streit Koivu Bouillon Gorges O'byrne have all contributed this year and deserve to be on the team.
