Nah, I don't agree (and I'm still considering myself in exile ).
Söder(malm) and further south (aka south of south) is generally nice.
Old Town is a typical tourist trap, there are nice stuff to see and some places to have a beer but keep a sharp eye on their prices.
Downtown (Norrmalm, Kungsholmen and Östermalm) is the snotty, posh and overpriced areas.
But the best advice is to grab one of those sketchy maps over the Metro lines, then locate and mark "Gamla Stan" (Oldtown) (red and green line) for touristy stuff.
For the rest just locate and mark "Slussen" (red and green), "Skanstull" (green) and "Hornstull" (red).
Then just pick any of them (or the three in between) and explore on foot. It's an island, you almost can't get lost without passing any of the three stations (or walking over quite substantial bridges in the NW and the extreme east of the island).
The two main streets Götgatan (between Slussen and Skanstull) and Hornsgatan (between Slussen and Hornstull) serves both as major pub/restaurant streets and locator guidelines.
I'd stay clear of Hornsgatan after midnight though, as it seems to be drug paradise by then (I spend many nights on the 7-eleven there and I see what's going on outside).

Well yes and no.
The middle part of Hornsgatan (around Mariatorget) can get a bit seedy late at night.
But I've never had any slightest problem wobbling home that way (I live just south of Hornstull).
And talking of that place, on the corner across from that 7/11 (if it's that one) is a very nice Pub called Black'n'Brown. Not very Swedish in any way but labelled "very nice English pub, even Fish'n'Chips tastes like home" by several UK friends (including Lpool/Wirral Fish'n'Chips experts).
Thanks very much for the advice so far, we'll certainly be down in Södermalm tomorrow or the day after, really looking forward to seeing a bit more of the city and of course the game on the weekend as well.
Swing by Bredäng (red line) if you have time for some Swedish "million project" failures if you want to see that kind of environment...
well without that "failure" hundreds of thousands (even a million nation wide) wouldnt have anywere to live. I mean were would all our "minorities" live? Under a bridge?
Not everyone can afford a villa or an expensive apartment in hammarby sjöstad...
The appartments look boring, but the standard are often pretty good (allthough not always...)
Plus if you REALLY want inexpensive meals, a pizza resturant in Bredäng could be somthing to check out

Then why do they feel the need to bring in a hundred thousand new "minorities" every year? The Swedish immigration system is a big failure and it's gonna erupt sooner rather then later. Finland has a good system.
Anyway that's a discussion more suited for Flashback...
So I've had a good look around the city during the day, pretty nice place - very close to London prices really, so yeah it's expensive but it has definitely been fun so far.
We're thinking we'll head to a nightclub tomorrow night and we're not sure where would be good, we've been warned away from Spybar (one of those Stureplan ones you guys warned me to avoid anyway I think!) so where do the locals tend to go for a night out?

Couldn't have said it better. I can't believe that people actually think it's a good idea to press people like fish in a can. I also agree that's a discussion that should take place on other forums, like Flashback.
If your'e going to Spybar, let me know if you run into Naken-Janne!

If we don't bring those in, then who would live in the million project houses, you dummy. And who would bake the pizzas?
Probably the same people that where baking them before the "million project-generation", the italians.
edit: i can't believe that was my #2000 post.
I have a hard time to belive that the pizzas soley made by Italians would be affordable or easy to come by (considering how few italians that currently live in Sweden)

It's funny how some minorities change nationalities and lose their passports when they come to sweden after having been sent away from Finland, Denmark or the Netherlands...

not a bad post for #2000...
Mattihp: I was making a point
I also have a hard time believing that pizza's are solely made by minority groups. Another popular myth is that our care of the old (äldrevården ) is solely run by minority groups.
Where i used to live there was an italian restaurant, with lighted candles, and italian music in the background. They closed shop long time ago and have been replaced by atleast 10 different Kebab shops that open with ridiculously low prices, just to cancel, and be replaced by the next.

Not solely, but the massive majority is.
At least in Stockholm and Gothenburg, and defining "minority" as having one or more parent born outside of Scandinavia.
Running your own or family owned small business that requires 10-12 hours workdays, quite a lot of economic risk and lots of support from friends and family isn't the first choice of most people, if they can get a better job somewhere else.
But the majority isn't Italian, that for sure.
I'd say south-east Europe, Balkans, Turkey (including Kurdistan), Iran and Iraq.
