You'd think a season full of speculation and a playoff race might finally merit some attention by the home of the blue jackets, 1460 the Fan. Yet they continue to ignore Blue Jacket topics of discussion on their primary sports talk show(The Big Show 4pm-6pm M-F). I tune into the Big Show on the drive home every night. And every night for the last month the topic of discussion has been OSU and College Football. Now you would think that 2 weeks after the last bowl game, and OSU's loss in the NC game, they'd have put that dog to rest and started talking about the CBJ. Not a word. I've called in twice on the drive home these past 2 weeks to see if they could discuss trade talk, player health, and the playoff race in the West. Both times the guy on the other end of the line said, Billy would be on after 6pm to talk hockey. Well by 6pm most if not everyone has pulled in the driveway and are sitting down to supper. Last night they put me over the top when Hooley made a comment that the 2 man advantage with Billy would be on short after the hour(6pm) and Spielman immediately mumbled something about hockey that Hooley and Herbstreet shared a chuckle about.
How about some primetime love for the boys in blue? We can talk football in a few months when there is actually something worthy of discussion. Last I checked we were 200 and some odd days from our next OSU game.

I know its frustrating, but what else would you expect? A station that lives and breathes OSU football; a host who has no background in hockey (plus the snide, jaded outlook that he passes off as journalistic objectivity); and two former football players as his sidekicks.
The station does let Rimmer and Matthews host occasionally-that's a positive, but their bread is buttered by football and everything else gets treated like the proverbial red-headed stepchild.
As the "home" of the CBJ you'd think there would be more emphasis on the sport. I guess we'll have to wait until we're in the Cup Finals to get some decent coverage. What would be really nice is if WTVN had the Jackets games-that would give the Clear Channel folks something to hang their sports hat on other than the lame "home of the best Buckeye coverage" (if you don't count actually broadcasting the game ).
Nordique, I heard that too. What Speils said was something about winning to get above .500. I really, really hope they hit some replay button on something he previosuly said, because I would think they would at least have some idea of the record.
It's not a lot better but I do find that 103.9 on FM does talk some hockey on my drive home. It's not all the time, but I do float between them and 1460. Then of course there is Archie on QFM96 in the morning. I'd wish they would give him an hour sports show. He seems to know more about Jackets' hockey than any sports guy out there, and he's just a fan like all of us.
Guys it is all about sponsorship believe me. Hopefully some things will change for next season.
1460 is terrible and Hooley is even worse. Their priorities is # 1 OSU Football, #2 Cleveland Sports #3 OSU Basketball... They give us token lip service. When they do talk about hockey it's usually part of a joke.
I will give Hooley credit, he did respond to my email of complaints last October. He denied ever making any jokes about the Jackets/NHL/VS. and I did notice a little more attention after that.
If there is no mention tonight I will send BH another email.
Of all of those guys, the one that enjoys talking Jackets is Herbstreit.
They talked for about 10 minutes in the opening half hour yesterday.
They were talking about the tentativeness of fans to come back to the arena, and how this 5 game road trip could either make or break the season in the eyes of wishy washy fans just waiting for the other shoe to drop.... how they keep hoping for the team to make the playoffs, etc.

Yep, that was it. He chuckled about them needing to win to get to .500.
23-18-6 is > .500 in my book, though I guess he could claim that 23 wins and 24 losses is below .500 regardless of the nature of those 6 overtime/shoot out losses.
Spiels is a huge OSU homer, and I kind of like him for his consistency, but Hooley really has no excuse for not being able to intelligently discuss the local NHL team in the middle of January.
QFM talked more hockey this morning than I've heard on the big show in 2 weeks, cumulative.
NPR(90.8) even talks CBJ when they do local news.
I don't want equal time with OSU, I just want some recognition that we have something special going on right now. Bottom line, I'm still convinced they simply don't have enough hockey knowledge to comfortably discuss the topic on the Big Show. Rimmer's guest appearances aside, the Big Show ignores hockey.

Well, I'm impressed they did that. I wasn't in the car for the first half hour.

AGREE!!!
OSU Football rules and it's useless to fight it. But it's time to give the boys some recognition. In this hockey season In January in COLUMBUS OHIO the Blue Jackets should be given more attention than the Cleveland Indians/Browns/Cavs.
Well you know damn right they'll at least be talking about it today. Hell, I was listening to WDFN in Detroit, and they were talking about Nasher's goal, and giving some love to the Jackets. That was good to hear.
Aaron Portzline said on "Between the Pipes" the other day that his CBJ blog gets 55,000-60,000 hits a week.
WAY MORE THAN THE DISPATCH'S BUCKEYE FOOTBALL BLOG!!!
I would speculate that's more a function of the ubiquity of OFS sports coverage in this town than the popularity of the Jackets. It also speaks to how much more hockey coverage they could afford to put forth.
I never listen to 1460. I'm usually out of its range to begin with, but I don't even bother tuning in when I'm in town. Even when I didn't have XM it was like this. I know what I'm going to hear and I know I won't like it.
And it doesn't broadcast very far, but that's besides the point.
Talk Radio here in Claveland, WKNR
Browns blah, blah, blah,
Cavs blah, blah, blah,
Commercial break:
Commercial for The Lake Erie Monsters
Commercial for WKNR, "The Home of the Lake Erie Monsters"
Back from break, not more than 2 minutes later. Caller "Hi I want to talk about this Hockey team I keep hearing about"
Talking Jockstrap: "Come on man, we're talking about the Browns! next caller"
(Mind you this was YESTERDAY, *** Was there to talk about the Browns?)

Alas, 1460 reflects the general populations and sportsfans' interest in the NHL.
But it shouldn't reflect, it should lead and educate, especially since their owner (WBNS/Wolfe) is a major sponsor and part owner of the team.
At worst, they shouldn't disdain the Jackets, which unfortunately, they seem to do on a regular basis. It's so obvious it's pathetic.

Today they were talking about the 85 Bears?????????????

I don't understand this. Which 1460 sponsors are begging to have their spots run right before or after a discussion of the 85 Bears or Roger Clemens steroid accusations.

Yes, but it won't. Media no longer leads on anything. For example, since the Big D cut its arts coverage, today's front page headline about the symphony's financial woes is the most coverage it's received. Now, I'm not saying that more coverage of the symphony would have averted the financial issues, but being largely ignorant of something hardly qualifies as "leading and educating."
And this is just local media. Have you watched network/cable news? It's crap. And I'm not talking about some real or imagined liberal bias, either. Just in terms of quality of reporting and news judgment.

1460 is a joke. Their ratings are a joke. Most of their on-air "talent" is a joke. It's run like as if a bunch of fratboys woke up one morning and decided they wanted a radio station.
They are barely a blip on the local radar. Most of the people I know, who happen to be a lot of college football fans, don't even know they exist.
I find it insulting, most of the time, when they try and talk hockey. They barely know anything about the Jackets and even less about hockey, in general.
I look forward to the day we can seperate ourselves from those jokers. Personally I think they hurt the Bluejackets image.
As far as XM goes, that's great for general hockey talk. But it's nice to have local coverage, for you team. They tend to have more knowledge of your team, then a bunch of guys focused on the whole league. Especially when you are team like the Jackets, in a smaller market and haven't made it to the playoffs.
This really frosts me! I have ranted about 1460's coverage before. Kills me on game days that they would rather talk about the size shoes the Buckeyes wear rather than the Jackets. Sad thing is, other than Archie on QFM, no other station is any better. 1230 is home to the Cavs, and does Cavs reports, but not a peep about the Jackets. 610 is up OSU's ass as well, and Mark the Shark seems to avoid it like the plague. Loves to talk about the Indians all year long.
Would sure be nice to see someone in this city jump on the Jackets bandwagon. At least give em some love on a regular basis.
