First of all, I am not intending to be offensive or imply that another other historic games or moments in hockey have been "fixed" or "staged", but with things in sports nowdays, like Barry Bonds' 73-home run season and his breaking of Hank Aaron's all-time Home Run record both basically being "fixed"/"staged" AND with today's game being an educational experience in which NBC and the NHL were likely trying to win back fans who gave up on hockey after the lockout, and with the shootout coming down between two of the most popular players in the game right now in Sidney Crosby and Ryan Miller, it seems as if that ending was almost a little too predictable. So, as much as it pains me to wonder this, I have to wonder if, for the sake of gaining back some of the fans lost during the lockout, the ending to that game was set-up/"fixed" in some way, shape or form. I mean, how convenient was it that the most popular and recognizable player in the NHL currently happened to be the hero in that game today?
Crosby delivered just what the NHL wanted. No more, no less. It was not fixed, but the kid delivered. Shame that Buffalo lost as the stadium would have erupted with an OT or shootout win. I still hate the shootout btw.
I knew someone sooner or later was going to start a thread saying it was fixed
If it was fixed then why did Colby Armstrong get called for a "questionable" penalty at the end of the 3rd so that the Sabres would have a 2 minute power play to start OT?
It wasn't fixed, like someone said above me, great players write stories of there own
Predictable or not, the great players write stories on their own.
Well put.

If the game was fixed, why wasn't it a more high scoring game? And why didn't Buffalo win?

I agree its not fixed, but if it was fixed why would Buffalo win? If the "fix" was in, wouldn't it mean more for the NHL to have Crosby win it in a SO than the sabres to win in front of the home crowd.

The game was simply tied and one of the best player in the world surprisingly scored the winning goal.
Those who think it was fixed should go back to their JFK or area 51 investigations. The CIA really did a great job with that winter classic game. Or maybe it was the NASA... They did fooled us with that "landing on the moon".
I thought about the fix scenario, but you know, big players do truely show up for big games and score big goals. And sometimes we are lucky to see them do it on TV.
Oveckhin was on HNIC last weekend, and got four goals. sadly that was not on the national broadcasted. Jagr was on HNIC as well and also got four points. happily, that one was nationally broadcasted. Crosby gets a GW goal today; that was also nationally broadcasted.
anyhow, let's not get all paranoid and conspiratorial about it. It simply was a very good week for the game.
And MLB DEFINITELY didn't fix Barry Bonds up with his records. Selig was dreading the day he had to face Bonds to publicly acknowledge and congratulate him for cheating his way to the record.
McGwire/Sosa is another issue.
And another thing - Buffalo outshot the Penguins. Would that have happened if the game was fixed?

Yep. Congrats on Letang. Oh you were talking about Crosby.. nope Letang>Crosby on shootout.
Hardly BIG goals. In fact nothing big about the Crosby goal. Miller went to poke check and failed.

If you wonder this you are not terribly bright. The fix was NOT in... to even imply it shows idiocy at a very large level.

Umm, what?
And no, it wasn't fixed. You think Crosby couldn't score a shootout goal without help? The NHL just got lucky and the best possible outcome occured.
no no no. As much as I despise cindy crosby he won the game for them. That is what great players do. Was it something you saw coming...of course, but like they say in the replacements..."Winners always want the ball... when the game is on the line."
What an enjoyable game today tho...and thats what should be discussed like the 11 other threads.
