Kara Yorio claims the NHL should go to a shootout after 2 overtimes. What do you guys think? I think it should either STAY THE WAY IT IS or go to a shootout after ONE overtime. What's the point of going to 2 overtimes then a shootout?
No way, playoffs have no room for a shootout, the fun is how crazed a quadruple overtime game can get! A shootout in this situation would be so anti-climactic.
I would have just stopped reading when I saw that Kara Yorio wrote the article. It would have saved you the time and effort of having to shake your head.
I'm sure everyone loathes the idea of ending a playoff game with a shootout. Ray Ferraro was on the radio here in Denver last week and suggested they go 4 on 4 after 2 OTs. That might make for a more interesting debate. His argument was that the quality of play once it gets to a 4th OT is becomes poor because the players don't have energy to play at a high level. Can't really disagree with that point... I watched both the Anaheim Dallas game from a few years back and the Vancouver Dallas one to the end, and they did eventually look like they were skating on mud. Still, these games are so rare that I don't see a need for change. Maybe just make sure there aren't back to back games scheduled so they'll always have at least a day to rest in case a marathon game does happen.
I don't like the idea of any limits being placed on overtime in the playoffs, i like the fact that the game could go forever, makes it all the more exciting when that ot game winner is scored.
Kara Yorio makes Mark Everson look like a Pulitzer winner. I don't think she has ever written a positive article about hockey. I don't know how someone can cover the game for so long yet hate it so much.
BTW, the subject came up before the playoffs began when Mr. Bettman announced the extension of the NHL's contract with the CBC. I was allowed into the conference call and asked Mr. Bettman what I've been wanting to ask for a few years now: "Can you uneqivocally say that, during your tenure, the NHL will not put the shootout into the playoffs?"
He did not hesitate: "Absolutely. I can unequivocally say that during my tenure we will not put the shootout into the playoffs."
He's on the record.
Hah, that would officially make the NHL a joke. A breakaway competition to decide who wins the most coveted trophy in all of sports.
The most coveted trophy in all of sports would probably be the World Cup. And they do use shootouts to decide who wins it. Doesn't make it right, but I'm jes' saying is all.
