All that Remains (This Darkened Heart album)
Norther
Trivium
Mors Principium Est
but the best of metal, for me...
Scar Symmetry... I mean, I think I like all their songs, the music is powerful, the lyrics are just great, and the singer for the 3 first albums is awesome...
Some examples, in no particular order...
Kaleidoscopic God
Holographic Universe
Retaliator
The Illusionist
Slaves to the Subliminal
Morphogenesis
I just don't know why anybody would reply with Tool, they're not metal... they're the best ****ing rock band though !
My avatar: Witchcraft (great band with retro sound)
But it depends on you r"metal" tastes. You might want to check out the influences of the bands you do like. They might lead you to new music.
Budgie, Diamond Head, Sweet Savage, Blitzkrieg-Metallica
Mc5, Fridjid Pink, Humplepie/Small Faces are late 60's bands that made big impressions.
Best suggestion is follow the links, usually you will find some really cool tunes

I only listened to Met,Mega, Testament, Anthrax, Danzig etc for years ..then I found some stuff that led me to other great music.
Can't stress Blind Guardian and Iced Earth enough!
Kreator (older stuff is more thrashy but I prefer the new stuff, Violent Revolution and after)
Slayer (duh)
Iron Maiden (duh x2)
Judas Priest (duh x3)
Black Sabbath (Ozzy days, pre-Technical Ecstasy)
Motorhead (duh x4)
Manowar (not that great, but definately a good laugh and some epic stuff)
Ozzy Osbourne (a lot is garbage *ahem* Ozmosis *ahem*)
Vader
Pantera (duh x5)
Death (epic band, especially Individual Thought Patterns, Human, Symbolic and Sound of Perseverance)
Sepultura (duh x7)
Sodom (****ing epic)
Black Metal Box - Separate .You can hear this song on myspace or facebook. I bought the album our of the itunes store. This is a new young band with a promising future im sure . That song is amazing!
If we're gonna mention bands from early rebellious years, I'll go ahead and mention Sword, Slayer, Type O Negative and of course, one ALWAYS needs more Iron Maiden.
I think their last album was very good, even after a few years we didnt heard of em.
August Burns Red
Parkway Drive
Miss May I
Killswitch Engage
Between The Buried And Me (More like a provessive metal)
I Killed The Prom Queen
As I Lay Dying

The Acacia Strain (<-- Heaviest Album of last year "The Dead Walk"...IMO of course...)
I saw The Acacia Strain last tuesday with August Burns Red. I wasn't really impressed by them though.
You could check Blind Witness http://www.myspace.com/blindwitness ... they're from Granby, QC. Pretty sick live! But they fit into the metalcore genre more than deathcore (as for Despised Icon and Ion Dissonnance)
One more edit... in case you didn't know

Quo Vadis (on the shores of ithaka ***** five star)
Carcass
Covenant
Dimmu Borgir
Overkill (one of the best thrash metal bands) I recommend to start with their frist album "Feel The Fire".
Loudness (Japanese Judas Priest) "Thunder In The East" and "Soldier of Fortune" for starters.
Kreator & Sodom (German thrash metal) For the frist one, "Enemy of God" and "Endless Pain", for the second one "Agent Orange" no doubt.
Sex Machineguns (speed/power metal) "Igniition", "Heavy Metal Thunder" and "Made In Japan".
Saxon (almost as good as Iron Maiden/NWOBHM) Almost all their stuff is great so i recommend pretty much any album.
X Japan (progressive metal, best ballads) "Blue Blood" for starters.
Sigh (avant-garde black metal) "Hangman's Hymn".
Maximum The Hormone (crazy Japanese metal) "Buiikikaesu".
Slaughter (Canadian death/thrash band) "Strappado" and "Fatal Judgement" from the band Strappado (Slaughter changed name).
And enjoy. This is , imho , one of the best metal album of the last decade. It's not very known in the mainstream but it's an absolute gem of the genre.
I'm not a huge metal fan but when I saw Metallica in Minneapolis Gojira opened up for them and I was very impressed with them live. Two of my favorite songs by them are Vacuity and Oroborus.

Know that you may have to give it a few listen and let it grow on you. First time i listened to it i was like "It's very good but not spectacular". However it totally grew on me after a few spin abd it's now one of my favorite album of all time.
I like Ensiferum, but that's about it. Only know Orphaned Land by name.
Orphaned land is a really good band, it is basically progressive death metal with middle eastern influences such as ouds(think of like an arabian lute type thing), tribal drumming, and chanting.
Their latest is album "Mabool" is hailed as their master piece however it is an album which emphesis is more on their "folk" side.
Personally I would recommend El Norra Alila. This album places more emphesis on metal; more harsh vocals, chalkfull of amazing riffs, has progressive structures, and its folk seem to be better integrated with the aggression than on Mabool.
