Jared Cowen signs with Spokane

COWEN SIGNS WITH CHIEFS
12/13/2006

The Spokane Chiefs have announced that Jared Cowen, the first overall selection in the 2006 Bantam Draft, has signed a Western Hockey League Standard Player’s Agreement.

“We’re very excited to make this announcement,” Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz said. “It’s the next step in the process and we’re looking forward to Jared joining our team at the end of the month.”

Cowen will play for the Chiefs on December 30th and 31st in a home-and-home series with the Tri-City Americans.

“Jared and his family have been honest and upfront since we identified him as the first overall selection,” Speltz said. “They showed a lot of class and integrity in coming down to camp and giving us a chance to show them what our organization is about.”

The 6’5”, 190 pound defenseman has one goal, 15 points and 73 penalty minutes with the Saskatoon Contacts of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League. Last season, in 41 regular season games, Cowen scored four goals, 16 points and added 66 penalty minutes.

Chiefs Director of Player Personnel Chris Moulton said, “Jared is a dynamic player who was our number one choice, by far. We’re ecstatic in having him play for the Chiefs and he will be a big part of our team in the future.”

Cowen joins second and third round selections in 2006, Burke Gallimore and Justin Bertow, in signing with the Chiefs.

I almost teared up when I read that on their website. Being from Columbus, and a Jacket and Penguin fan, and having only seen this team since their downfall, it's about time we get a light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully the fans here won't ruin him and make him ask for a trade...some of them are brutal.

God thats awful. Coming from a lifelong Chiefs fan it seems like the Chiefs winning ways were eons ago. We are in luck though because this organization has climbed out of that slump and there are a lot of pieces in place for them to return to their 90s form.

It all starts with Mitch Wahl; he's definately the best player they've come across since I've been here. Being an experienced hockey fan, I can see that this kid has top 10 NHL draft pick written all over him.

Let me rephrase that for you.

"Too bad Wahl is not a top 10 pick yet tho..."

While he's not ranked in the top 10, neither was Hamill last year...in fact I think alot of people had Hamill right about where Wahl is.

^^^^I hope that your basis of analysis comes from pure talent point of view, and not from the fact that he's American, I really do hope so.

If Kyle Beach is top 10 talent, why isn't Mitch Wahl? Look at their stats from their playoff series...

Like I said, just because a player is projected lower, doesn't mean it's not possible. Just wait and see.

Or do you guys actually watch the players we're talking about?

Is Beach still considered a top-10 talent? All of the reports I've read have ranked him around the 15 mark.

With the finish to the season he had, alot of question marks are up in the air about Beach.

For the better part of the season, I've seen what's been in store for him. His mouth would eventually get him in trouble, we all knew that, and it finally happened that someone (be it Bruton) laid him out. Since the concussion, he's not been the same offensive threat. After averaging better than a point per game before the injury, afterwards he was merely ineffective. In the playoffs, he was held scoreless and acted as a major distraction to the team.

As I said at the start of the year, stay away from this kid. He's got the talent and trash talking of Jeremy Roenick with the antics and idiocities of Ray Emery.
