During Training Camp and the preseason the Ducks gave him a chance to show what he could do playing on the first line with Federov at times. He hasn't been too impressive in my opinion.

Most likely he will see 3rd and 4th line ice time to start the season, although he may be sent to the minor leagues to further develop his game once Mike Leclerc or Andy McDonald return from the injured reserve.

I think Babcock sees something none of us fans see because he keeps playing Smirnov with Fedorov. I think they played together again last night with Sykora. They've been on the same line through most of camp and I'd be surprise if Smirnov doesn't start the season with the big club even if I think he belongs in Cincy. But then, Chistov wasn't that impressive in camp last year either and ended up having a decent rookie season. We'll see in a few days.

Smirnov was used on the penalty kill last night so I gather Babcock things he can develop into a strong 2 way player. The guy has great skill and size, but so far his biggest foe is his own lack of intensity.

He should develop into a very good power forward, if he wants to.

Smirnov looked decent in the 1st preseason game. Every once in a while you see glimpses of what he can do, and they're good enough that he's probably got a good 3 or 4 years of leeway before they give up on him.

He's started that line out together, but Smirnov has only wound up getting 14 minutes a night or so, while Feds and Sykora are in the 20's.
