You must be if you think the Hurricanes would trade Staal for Vanek...

This is just beyond nutbar. Hurricanes are blowing chunks this year and now we're seeing E-S pop up frequently on the boards.

Staal is a franchise forward. He's big, he can score. He's strong on the puck. He's got his name on the cup.

Trading away the only player on the team who belongs on the first line is hardly a viable solution for Carolina, unless they want to be fishing for top 5 picks for the next few years.

Carolina has too many players who're falling out of their twilight. Give him some decent linemates and things will without a doubt change.

Carolina wouldn't trade him for Vanek. Staal is their franchise player.

Trade Staal for Vanek and Vanek needs Staal for passes and space. Staal is a franchise player who can make everybody around him better. Vanek is one of those players from which Staal could benefit. I doubt Vanek would be as valuable as he is now without any legitimate center. Keep Staal, you've got him and Ward..Building blocks for the future. Carolina is a pesky team. You'll turn it around..

Columbus: Brassard, Filatov, Modin and a 1st!

Carolina: Staal & Whitney

But why on earth would they want to get rid of Staal in the first place? He is there corner stone.

Staal is definitely worth more than Vanek. He can control a game all by himself, and is a true playoff competitor. And is not injury prone and will put up 40 goals 80 points a year.

just for the record, no canes fan has anything to do with this premise. a couple of posts hinted we could be behind such an idea.

no.

Come playoff time, there are very players I would rather have then Eric Staal, he takes his game to a whole 'nother level.

He is the Cam Ward of forwards. Average 1st liner during the regular season, and top-3ish forward in the playoffs.

Vanek is too valuable as is Staal.

I'd probably take Vanek > Staal though.

They cant get rid of Staal, because after Cole, who is left on the Canes that is a master at the dive I dont care how bad the Canes may be, they wont trade away Staal!

Does anyone else think Staal, making $8.125 mil a year, is overpaid? Only 3 other players in the NHL make more than that, and they're names are Ovechkin, Crosby and Malkin. Staal clearly hasnt accomplished as much as they have.

Staal is gonna play out the rest of his contract as a Cane.

i see what you are doing here, but the canes have an internal budget(i think), even if staal and vanek are similar in value the difference in salary would name carolina turn it down. thats forgetting the face of the franchise arguments.

Staal is worth a lot more than Vanek.

Vanek is good, but he's a one-trick pony. Staal can do it all.

Most Canes fans think it was a necessary overpayment. He'll be a Cane until 2017, so we've got him throughout his prime years

There is no difference in salary. In fact, after this year, the difference favors Vanek.

Staal - 09/10 - $6.0M
Vanek - 09/10 - $6.4M

Staal - 10/11 - $7.5M
Vanek - 10/11 - $6.4M

Overpaid? Yea, a little...

Wait until Getzlaf, Kovalchuk, Kane, and Toews come up for contract renewals. Carolina bought a lot of UFA years with that contract, and Staal is a very very good playoff performer, something money can not buy.

If Staal had better linemates he would hover between 90-100 points a year consistently considering how healthy he stays and his dominant play during the second half of the season. He's a tough competitor who can shoot, pass, crash the net, and be defensively responsible. Best of all he has passion, the only drawback being that passion turns into frustration when you're on this year's Canes squad.

There are about a half-dozen forwards in this league that I'd consider before before Eric.. Vanek not being one of them.

Vanek, +1st, +Prospect = Staal is by far, the superior player.
