He started out well with Pronger, Peca, Spacek ,Roloson and others
He has also done some head scratching things he refused or held off negotiations with Ryan Smyth in the summer of 2006 Then finds himself pushed at the trade deadline Feb 2/07 and makes a trade in like 30-45 mins.
Forced to trade Pronger and makes out ok not great again seems to only focuses in on a couple teams not waiting for a better offer imo just pulled the trigger
Lets Laraque walk over a no trade contract when Laraque was a faithful and dedicated oiler
This summer where do I start Lost Sykora and Nylander at the same time
Signs Tarnstrom then trades Jason Smith The Captain and leader with Lupul for Pitkanen and Sanderson.
Still Unhappy with the perception that nobody will sign in Edmonton He signs Souray to a 5yr contract to prove the theory wrong
still eager to change the perception he hands out a offer sheet for Vanek Buffalo matches with in seconds
Still Lowe pushes forward determined to get a player he signs Penner to an Offer sheet and gets him.
Lowe say what you want he has maybe tried to hard to impress maybe after last year he obviously has to do something but if the right moves are not there it might be better to wait he did not and this what we have. He could not foresee the injuries to this team so that has to be factored into his evaluation. That said he was to admit to rebuild a winner or change the teams image when in fact he may hurt the team and it's image.
Lowe signed Mactavish to a four year extension on July 20 2006
Oilers re sign Lowe for 4 more years on September 06 2007
thoughts?

That particular statement strikes me as being scarily accurate. It certainly is consistent with Lowe's later admission, i.e. 'holy moley, we've got a lot of guys here!'

Ya it's like he goes into a haze or fog on a mission to accomplish something and then wakes up and goes why did I do that
I dont want to repeat what everybody already knows but, I have to get this off my chest.
Coming into the "new NHL" era, Lowe had a game plan and it was pretty darn good.
He finally was able to get MacT the stud Dman he's always wanted in Pronger and lock him up.
Then he went after Forsberg, he didnt sign but he was close to it, so he signed a MacT type player in Peca.
He added to it during the season with, Spacek, Tarnstrom, Roli, and Samsonov. The team gelled so well they cam within 1 goal of the cup.
However, Lowe's game plan had a wrench thrown in it when Prongers wanted out. The Peca, Spacek, Tarnstrom, Samsonov all left too. I think right then and there, when the Pronger situation became public, Lowe should have come out and told the fans that he is going to full rebuild mode. He had the fans, media, and the entire city on his side with that situation. He didnt say anything about a full rebuild though.
Then the past season the Oilers crashed and burned, injuries took there toll on the team and we were sitting way out of a playoff spot. During that trade deadline, I wish Lowe did two things, 1) Sign Smyth 2) Call the other 29 other teams and let them know your veterans (other than Smyth) are up for sale, see what kind of buzz you get for a guy like Smith. Buffalo was looking for a D-man, but who knows what you would have got from them, maybe we would have ended up with Coburn from Atlanta, because Philly really wripped them off in that deal IMO. Atlanta was also the team that gave up the Alex Bourret for Pascal Dupius and a 3rd rd pick. It would have been nice to take advantage of a despearte GM.
If all that happened our young D would have looked like, Greene, Smid, Coburn, Grebs, and Gilbert. I think thats a good young D to build around. Then upfront, at least we could say we still have a decent number one line in Smyth, Horcoff, Hemsky. And thats also something to build around and the team looks pretty good going into the draft picking Gagner and Nash (no Plante cause we wouldnt have dont the trade with NYI). Then in the summer signing Souray for the backend (dont sign Transtrom). And who knows maybe Lowe would trade Lupul anyways, but lets say hes in the line up still. I wouldn't go after Penner because I know with the 08 picks there's going to be some pretty good players, and depending on how the growing pains go, and the season plays out, there's a chance to be grabbing a top end franchise player.
I'd quietly draft players and let them grow around the veteran players like Smyth, Souray and Roli to take some of the offensive/defensive pressure off. That way you have the team built in 3 levels, kind of like how Colorado did last season. The first level is of your veterans like I pointed out; Smyth, Souray, Staios, Roli, Moreau, and Reasoner. Then you have the guys in the middle with still a lot of responsiblity but not all the wieght of the pressure in the second level, like; Horcoff, Hemsky, Stoll, Torres, and Pisani. And the third Level is of course the young kids who develop and are nourished under the coaching staff and the surrounding players; Gagner, Cogliano, Brodziak, Gilbert, Greene, Grebs, Poliout, Jaques, Stortini and maybe Coburn if that trade happened.
Now I'm not saying our "Level 1" vets are the same as Colorado's Sakic and Hejduk, but its a pretty good mix. I think if you let those young players play and develop under those conditions, we'd be winning the Northwest division for a lot of years ahead.
But I think why Lowe never admitted to being in full rebuild mode is because he's such a competitor...I'm just worried that he's so much of a competitor, and the way the seasons going so far, that he's going to get desperate again and sell a lot of our young players for a good, but not great sniper for scoring help. I know deep down he doesn't want that 08 pick Burke has of ours, to come back and bite him in the ass, and I'm getting worried Lowe is going to sell some of our good kids to try and make the playoffs.
Wow! This is really freaking long and I'll be suprised if anyone reads this..but I just needed to say it.
I would add that if we did not trade Ryan Smyth when we did...we would not have Gagner. I am happy to trade a mediocre present for a bright future. Keep going KLowe!

And if he didn't make the boneheaded offer sheet on Penner we might have been able to get Stamkos to go with Gagner.
The point I was trying to make (maybe poorly) was Kevin Lowe has gambled and lost with some recent decisions.
- He thought "team Tough" was the way to go no need for an enforcer by letting Laraque walk. Say what you will about big George but the team has not hit consistently since he left imo with him just in the line up everyone grew an inch and were braver not afraid to hit someone.
- Lowe Gambled that Smyth would take a hometown discount and lost
-Lowe has now gambled on Penner with the jury still out
My point being he keeps hoping he gets a break here or there instead of making sound decisions, he is over competitive and loses sight of the whole big picture.
I am afraid to think of what he will do next cause he sure as hell won't like giving his buddy Burke a #1 pick

coming into the new nhl era.. lowe had no plan.. we had low budget by default not by his "plan", and we had sub-average prospect pool..
he got lucky with pronger because blues had to sell him and very few teams had the cap room to go after pronger.. so the pie fell straight from the sky and landed right on his head..
then he got over-the-hill peca which was a major lapse thinking he's got his 2nd line scoring..
then he proceeded to ice a bubble team with conklin/maakenen in net till it's apparent that the team was going to the miss the playoffs.. paid the premium on someone else's 37 year old backup goalie.. the team squeezed into the playoffs by sucking less than the canucks..
miracle playoff runs..
then when the table has turned on the pronger situation, he completely got ripped off by burke just like how he had done the samething to the blues.. proceeded to be arrogant about refusing to fill the huge void left by pronger (just like how he'd refused to go after a 1st line centre or a starting goalie in the past).. refused to sign smyth to extention.. the team crashed and burned.. (injury to the ahl defensemen had very little to do with how sucky the team was)..
lowe never admitted full-rebuilt because he didn't know he was rebuilding.. he thought he could ignore how much pronger meant to this team.. he thought he was able to out-dare smyth.. he was wrong..
so this offseason he pulled his panicking button and assembled a high-price team that was full of question marks just like any other oilers season..
I would add that if we did not trade Ryan Smyth when we did...we would not have Gagner. I am happy to trade a mediocre present for a bright future. Keep going KLowe!
heh.. it looks like a crappy present for a crappy future..
what kind of argument is this.. good for lowe to assemble a sucky team so that we winded up with high draft prospects.. good plan!..
it's clear to me Lowe seems to have no plan in place Last year he thought he had great offensive forwards with Sykora and Lupul. This year he abandons that plan and brings in all offensive defensemen. Next he will be looking at highly offensive goaltenders
