Finding NHL talent beyond Round 1

Simple question. Who are the best clubs at finding NHL talent outside of the first round. I don't want historic numbers or data from regimes that are no longer in power. To be consistent, let's look at the 2003 draft and forward.

We're all aware of Detroit's luck in finding Datsyuk & Zetterberg almost a decade ago...but which clubs have recently found NHL'ers with their 2nd - 7th round picks? People like to say STL is such a great drafting team, but since the 2003 draft, they've produced exactly 3 NHL regulars from picks outside of Round 1 (Backes, Stempniak & Polak).

Don't count shiny, new prospects that are all but guaranteed of making it...I only want guys that HAVE ACTUALLY MADE IT as NHL regulars to this point. Granted, we may be discounting the 2007-2009 drafts...but there should still be enough data available to determine which clubs are better than others outside of round 1.

I'll start. Since 2003, the Blues have had 38 picks between 2003 and 2007 (52 picks through 2009) between rounds 2 and 7. They've produced 3 NHL'ers... an 8% success rate through 2007.

It's way too early to judge, because many of these players are still developing, even in the oldest draft classes.

The 2003 draft was 7 drafts ago. I think we can start making some determinations about drafting departments. I'm not suggesting that everybody that is going to make it, has made it. I'm simply more curious about the statistics by club of those that have made it thus far. There are probably very few guys that were drafted between 2003-2006 that are going to make it that haven't already. Even if there are some, it won't affect those that already have arrived.

The age rage is too optimistic, especially for late round picks - most need a LOT of time to develop. A guy like Ericsson, for example, only broke into the league last year, and he was drafted in 2002.

But I'll bite. For a few random teams:

2004
Alexander Edler
Mike Brown
Jannik Hansen

2005
Mason Raymond

2006
Sergei Shirokov (?)

San Jose

2003
Matt Carle
Joe Pavelski
Josh Hennessy (?)

2004
Thomas Greiss
Torrey Mitchell

2005
Marc-Edouard Vlasic
Derek Joslin
Jamie McGinn (?)

Montreal Canadians

2003
Maxim Lapierre
Ryan O'Bryne
Jaroslav Halak

2004
Mikhail Grabovski
Greg Stewart
Mark Streit

2005
Guillaume Latendresse
Matt D'Agostini
Sergei Kostitsyn

2007
Max Pacioretty

The Blackhawks are also pretty good.

Very limited success for Kings.

2003 (7picks)
2nd - 44th - RW Konstantin Pushkarev (17gp)
5th - 152nd - C Brady Murray (4gp)
6th - 174th - C Esa Pirnes (57gp)

2004 (8picks)
6th - 174th - RW Scott Parse (16gp)*
7th - 221st - G Danny Taylor (1gp)
8th - 238th - G Yukata Fukufuji (4gp)

2005 (7picks)
3rd - 72nd - G Jonathan Quick (91gp)*

2006 (7picks)

2007 (9picks)
2nd - 52nd - RW Oscar Moller (42gp)
2nd - 61st - RW Wayne Simmonds (108gp)*
4th - 95th - D Alec Martinez( (1gp)

2008 (7picks)
5th - 123rd - C Andrei Loktionov (1gp)*

2009 (9picks)

* = Currently on a NHL roster.

03-06 would be 6.55 games per pick
03-07 would be 8.97 games per pick
03-08 would be 7.60 games per pick

Re-arrange this for Lombardi's picks (new regime) and you'd get
06-07 would be 9.44 games per pick
06-08 would be 6.08 games per pick
