Hawks gain cap space next season while not downgrading our team this year and get a good goalie prospect for longterm (2-3 yrs)
The Hurricanes get a 23 yr old PP QB who has alot of potential and would easily replace Corvo who leaves as UFA and the Hurricanes have Ward now with Peters in system so they can afford to move a goalie prospect considered to be a project and years away
I'd bite if I were Rutherford. But I could totally see Rutherford kicking himself in 4 years after this trade. Murphy will either be a total bust or a star in the NHL considering his style.
If I were Carolina I would think long and hard about this deal. I think Murphy can be something special so I don't think he pulls the trigger. Add any prospect not named Sutter, Boychuk, Bowman, McBain or Murphy and I think you probably have yourself a deal.

Flame away!
Seems like a reasonably fair proposal on the surface. I think Murphy has a lot of potential....but as you say, his chances with the Canes are limited due to Ward.
Don't get to watch Chicago very often though. A couple of questions on Barker from the Hawks fans.
Looking over the minutes of the most recent game, he appears to be the dman with the least amount of minutes. Is that because his defensive game is lacking? If so, how? Or..is he in the Doghouse somehow?
Corvo (love him or hate him) eats up a lot of minutes (PP, Kill, Even strength) for the Canes (and has from day 1). He is by no means without his flaws though.
Is Barker capable of that type of role? or is he more of a PP QB that will still need to develop a defensive game?
I think we wait a little bit to trade murphy, his value is looking like it will be a lot higher in a few years.
Bubba88's proposal looks good to me.
Unless he goes Tuuka Rask on the AHL, I don't think so. I cannot instantly remember when a backup goaltender really fetched anything. Instead it seems teams are just waiting to get real value for them and then losing them for scraps, stunting their development in the process. A backup is what he will be with Ward there for the long haul anyway.
Its a deal that makes sense to both teams, and if Corvo likes Carolina and Canes him, he can always sign there again in the off-season. But Corvo being the RH shot on Canes PP would of course be lost in the short term.
Of course, the second proposal could make sense also.

More or less. We have 4 d-men that are better than him (which isn't a knock on him moreso than a compliment to the rest of our team), which is why he gets bottom 6 minutes. He also doesn't play on the PK right now since we use Keith/Seabrook/Hammer/Sopel.

Thanks. That makes sense.
How is his skating and ability to move the puck? Is he physical in his own zone?
I don't know how many of you guys have watched Corvo, but having seen alot of him myself I don't want anything to do with him. If you guys think Barker makes alot of mistakes, you will be pulling your hair out with Corvo. I honestly think he may be the dumbest hockey player I have ever seen. All the tools, but no tool box. Definately not the type of defenseman you want on your bottom pairing. If your defence is thin then maybe you can live with his high risk/high reward game, but with our top four it is just not a smart move. If we are going to get another defenseman back for Barker it will be a safe stay at home type, or a young two-way defenseman.

I don't know if I'd go that far but I will say he is totally used inappropriately by playing on the first pairing here. He does make mind-boggling decisions at time with the puck which often can be traced to putting his brain in park. He also seems to have a knack for going to exactly the wrong spot when the puck is worked down low in Carolina's end. It's elementary positioning for a guy with his experience but something gets lost in translation between his brain and his legs too often.
Barker would be a nice addition here and he was highly thought of and given strong consideration during his draft year. From Carolina's standpoint though Corvo would almost certainly have to go the other way.
Skating is a minus, but puck movement is strong. Plays physical selectively.
But he's only 22, and probably better than Seabrook was at that age.
I agree with this but he is 23, 24 by the start of the postseason. He is a bit behind Seabrook's development defensively, but well ahead offensively.
Part of the reason you are seeing a drop in Barker's minutes is to showcase Sopel, who has been playing great and is on the block. Obviously the Hawks would rather keep Barker than Sopel so it's worked out. On most teams in the league Barker could make the 2nd pairing.
Overall I don't think I'd trade Barker until summer.
