This has been a huge pet peeve of mine for yrs now....
I understand having every camera be high speed would not be economically feesable , but the incredible quality of hockey slow motion replays would be the next HUGE technological step this league could take... (i mean cameras other than the play by play cameras)
At the minimum, the overhead goal cameras absolutely need to be high speed... That's 2 per stadium.
Every time we're left to decipher whether or not a black blurry thing is a puck or whatever near the goaline or when the puck hit a highstick on a goal, i cringe.
I want some team to or network to take the investment... it would literally change everything.... (ok a little dramatic, but you get the point)
The Boxing(HBO), NFL(CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN), MLB and the Olymipics have been using it for yrs...
The NHL needs to bring this in... yesterday.
In case you don't know what i mean by High speed cameras -
cheesy but excellent example of how its used..
The NHL... the replays all have a blur to the video when they're in motion... something completely eliminated with higher speed cameras...
Also watch any NFL game and wait for a challenge.... the replay images are amazing with their high speed replay cameras...
How about we start with all games in HD first, then work on the heavier technology. I feel like I'm watching games under water when I watch them not in HD.
Never really thought about it for some reason, but I think it would be a great idea, barring of course the NHL could afford it. Like you said the MLB has it(along with the other professional leagues you named) and it looks amazing to see Brandon Inge make a diving catch at 3rd or the spin on Justin Verlanders breaking ball as it darts and dives as it approaches the plate in high-speed!
A good way to keep costs down would simply be to have them manually activated; when the puck crosses the blue line into the offensive zone, flip it on. When it exits the zone, turn it off.

High speed cameras have been around WAAAAYYYY longer than HD...
Higher shutter speeds - more frames per second - clearer replays...
been around for yrs.
Hockey could really use them. Sometimes it's impossible to see the puck well, even in slowed down replays.
As far as I know there's usually only a couple high speed cameras at a event, and they're not used for main broadcast purposes, only for interesting replays.
Anyone know what kind of cameras the NFL uses... they have like 20 of them filming per production. Maybe the NHL can scoop in buy their old olds when they upgrade... Give NFL Films a call... didn't they just close operations?
Just get em in the game.....it's in the best interest of the ratings and networks to get er done....
im sure they have looked into it. itll come around with time i think. and i believe they used some form of enhanced slow-mo during the playoffs, am i right?
Fox Sports West has this for Kings games, they call it FoxMo. It seems like they only have one ice level camera on it though.
The NHL might not be the richest sport in the world but they can absolutely afford slow motion, HD cameras. Does anyone know if the cameras are owned by the league, tv station or the arenas? I assume it's by the tv station so if you want to get them added, write a letter or email to your local broadcaster.
