General manager Brian Burke had two deals cooking with the Chicago Blackhawks on the weekend, but they were believed to focus on defenceman Brent Sopel and both were dead by Sunday. Burke has found the trading market to be a difficult one with the Leafs so obviously in need, but first and foremost, he’s trying to recover the first and second round draft picks sacrificed in the Kessel deal.
His next move was going to replace a one-way Leaf contract with a deserving kid from the Marlies, but until the Mitchell injury in Monday’s match dictated a change, the team’s improved play and four points the past three games made him back off.
He'd be trying to trade vets for draft picks regardless of whether he had made the Kessel deal or not.
Not just that, no one has an issue with losing first or second round picks per se, it's OUR picks that matter because, at present, they're so high. I hold hope we will lower it as the year goes on though.
It's not going to happen unless we trade Kabs, the most we'll see coming back is second rounders. Teams value first rounders, even low first rounders, like they're first born child. Except in Toronto of course.
Why would boston ever give that 1st back to us? It is valued wayyyy to high right now. Taylor Hall has been a beast, so has Segiun. I mean, this pick, if it remains a lottery pick will have there future set up nicely.
And even if somehow Burke does the impossible, he re acquires the pick, knowing these damn leafs, we will just start playing like a top 5 team and miss the playoffs by 5 points, securing us no lottery pick and a 12th overall draft pick.

correction, people here value draft picks. Successful teams like colorado, philly, detroit, clagary, pre lockout toronto trade about 40 % of their first rounders
Burke's looking for more than a player for a low pick I would imagine.
Let's not forget how creative this guy is - remember all the injury contracts he picked up at the deadline last year, including Kolzig.
I would imagine that he's trying to do something similiar this year - increasing the value of the pick coming back the other way, by taking on contracts and relieving teams of cap stress.
That's why I don't think it will merely be *Leaf player* for *pick* and is probably a significant reason as to why it's taking such a long time for him to get something done.
ALSO - more Eck rumours. The latest is Ponikarovsky heading to Edmonton, via Chicago - strange, as I thought that the Chicago deal talks were dead, as Simmons reported
So I was right, and Burke wanted the first out of Chitown... might be why the deal died.
It made sense to try - most common hockey fans know of Chicago's cap situation and how desperate they have been to try and rectify it with the UFAs they have coming up.
Try and catch a desperate team in a bad moment, and try and buy their first pick off of them - why not? Worth the shot certainly.
If the Boston fans in HF were the general managers, they would hang onto it even if they were offered Getzlaf for it. Yes, that pick is not going anywhere.

The use is as follows, according to wikipedia:
Quote:
A rhetorical question is a figure of speech in the form of a question posed for its persuasive effect without the expectation of a reply (ex: "Why me?")[1] Rhetorical questions encourage the listener to think about what the (often obvious) answer to the question must be. When a speaker states, "How much longer must our people endure this injustice?", no formal answer is expected. Rather, it is a device used by the speaker to assert or deny something.
I completely understand rhetorical questions, It don't get why your question was rhetorical, and if it was rhetorical, it was obviously an attempt at humour, and I don't get rhetorical humour. That's all.
The article says he's trying to recover a 1st and 2nd round pick, but not necessarily from Boston.
Let's face it - the leafs #1 pick, now owned by Boston, is worth MUCH more than it was before the season started. If Burke had of waited I think he could have landed Kessel for just the one 1st rounder.

I'm always amazed by the number of people who own crystal balls. I always figured Miss Cleo was the only one.
