Glen Sather Signing Day Assesment of Redden and Roszival

Check out these audio clips from the press conference on July 1st 2008. Sather's comments on what kind of player Wade Redden is, after he signed him for what seems life

It's completely unfathomable to the reality based.

I still don't think we've seen the best of Redden, something in my gut tells me he'll turn it around, not sure why I feel that though. I also think he's been playing well this season if not good. I think so many people associate his play with his contract.

Redden has been one of our best defensemen, in my opinion.

Roszival on the other hand? Yeah...

But overall: defensively we're doing a piss-poor job.

Rozsival's agent Rich Winter stuck to his demand of 4 years/$20 million. Sather refused to give it to him but when the Rangers struck out on Hossa,Sather gave it to him. Signed Redden freeing up Tyutin to acquire Zherdev. Sather's first instincts about Rozsival were correct. The contract structure should give him a ticket out of NY.

Redden's game has fallen apart ever since Torts gave him more responsibility by playing the PP. He got beat badly on the Bradley goal and on Saturday night against FLA.

Its been said a thousand times but keeping Tyutin and not signing either Redden or Rozsival would at this point be a much better bang for the buck. Its not like losing Zhervdev would have done anything but give us a better first round pick and keeping our 2nd last year.

What he said. And I said it at the time too.

No, I assure you, we have. If you'd like to revisit it, take a time machine back to 2002.

Right now, hes playing a solid/sound defensive game and thats really all we can hope for at this point. If he was making 3-4 million, no problem. Being hes making 6.5 million, you expect some sort of dynamic quality and theres just nothing like that anymore. Its painfully similar to the Drury situation. They both play solid games, but if you judge them by the contract and expect something more, you're just fooling yourself.

I have and still give both players the benefit of the doubt and look at their play regardless of their contracts.

But in the audio clip Sather states he think "Wade Redden is the best first passer in the game today."

Does he really believe that ?

Or did he say it to justify that ludicrous contract ?

Actually, I think Redden's breakout passes are the strongest part of his game. How can you judge that against the rest of the league? You really cant, but I can at least see where Sather was coming from with that comment.

it's difficult to look at one's play without considering their pay. Sure, when comparing two players you typically do not need to discuss one's pay to determine if one is better than the other. But more often than not when talking about your team, i.e., the Rangers, you're evaluating the player as part of the team and since there is a salary cap, his pay will come into play every time because it affects how the rest of the team can be constructed.
