Could we pulloff a big trade?

So the question is,

Do you think we have the depth in prospects to pull of a big trade?

Looking at our depth in defense,
Matt Corrente
Tyler Eckford
Alexander Urbom
Matt Taromina
Eric Gelinas
Brandon Burlon

Martin and Oduya will be here awhile and possibly next year Corrnete and Eckford will be ready and Urbom is slowly creeping up to be NHL ready.

Couldn't we pull of a big trade for what we need?

Just wanted to hear others opinions on if we could pull of a blockbuster or at least a decent center or PMD.

we do finally have some nice prospects. I kind of like to hold on to them, for a little bit at least.

I like Urbom and Burlon as much as everybody else on the board, but relatively speaking, those aren't the components to make a blockbuster deal. Ie, a guy like Anssi Salmela would have made this list last year and he only fetched Nic Havelid.

Salmela wasn't really a legit prospect...

People expected way too much out of Havelid and had severe man crushes on Salmela

I went back and watched some of those games, and Havelid made a lot of nice plays that I overlooked at the time. I was so quick to scapegoat him with every little mistake he made because I wasn't crazy about the price we paid.

It looked like Sutter just didn't do a good enough job getting him used to the system. He looked lost ALL the time, and he did not have that problem in Atlanta.

In hindsight, Salmella isn't tearing it up and we have no return for that trade. If we can keep a player I'm fine with it, but I'm going to have to pass on another rental. Although Salvador is the man and I'm glad we picked him up.

This...

We've been landing some pretty decent prospects in the past couple of drafts so why would we trade one or two of them when we've been saying for the past several years that our prospect pool is kinda "weak".

I would love to land a proven PMD with a roster player and a pick/prospect but I just think that Lou will land that player via draft and not via free agency or trades. Maybe Lou can dangle his 1st rounder + a prospect in order to land the player he wants in this years draft ?!?!?

Salmela was awful, and when Havelid came in, the team promptly started losing, ending in that which I do not wish to mention in post season. Sure, he wasn't supposed to be a #1 D-man, but the team tanked with him in the lineup vs how well it did before we traded for him. In hindsight, I'd rather have salmela. When we made the trade, I thought it was a steal. FML.

Oh yeah it was allllll Havelid's fault. He was single handedly the reason we lost.

Forget about Madden, Pando and White playing more than Parise, Zajac and Oduya. It was Havelid's fault.

I didn't mean to say it was all havelid's fault.. I meant that considering how terribly the team played when he came over, regardless of if it was his fault or not, I'd rather have traded salmela for a keg of beer than for havelid, or have not traded him at all. The trade did absolutely nothing for us, and if I had the keg of beer, maybe I would've been blacked out at game 7 instead of heartbroken and angry...

I attribute the way we played as a huge layoff after St. Marty's day. We peaked very hard during that time and were on a huge role and when we won that game I'm sure there was kind of a layoff after.

We were 12-3 heading into that game and went 1-7 after. Pretty dramatic difference in the level of play.

We have the prospects to swing a trade for a good veteran player, but to do it we'd have to gut the farm system we have so carefully built up over the last few years. For this reason, I don't think Lou will be making any major moves with our prospects any time soon.

I share this same doubt. As far as I know, we do not have Taormina's NHL rights.

This team doesn't need a major trade to be a real contender. What we do need is first, get healthy and second to get tougher on the wing. I think a good addition that shouldn't cost you your first born would be Colby Armstrong. Alyways disliked the guy, but would love to have him as a Devil. (Pending UFA).

And on defense, I would try and trade Oduya for Zidlicky, who's also a pending UFA. A healthy team with those two additions would make us a cup contender in my opinion.

I wish. We would probably have to deal someone like Langs or Bergie IMO to get a guy that makes us a top notch contender. Corrente could also be dangled.

Your asking the wrong question. Do we have the assets? Yes. Between prospects, draft picks, etc.

The real question is: will this block buster trade make us better and propel us to a Cup? Is there a single player that does that to us?

And why does it have to be the big trade? Hell, picking up Marshall late in the season seemed silly. He was a big part of our 2003 Cup run though. Go figure.

Oduya is an established player signed for 3 more years. Zidlicky, as you said, is a pending UFA. I don't see how that trade would work.

A "big trade" like Arnott for Nieuwendyk/Langenbrunner? No. We don't have the movable assets on the pro roster.

"Big trades" like Mitchell for O'Donnell, Souray for Malakhov, or perhaps even Pederson/Morrison for Mogilny? Maybe.

This team needs to find a way to make an upgrade in trade market if they plan to seriously challenge the Cup this year. Not another Havelid-style move, something more consequential. I'm not talking about acquiring a superstar player necessarily, but someone who can be a difference maker in playoffs.

He isn't leaving Nashville. He's their best forward, by far.
