Jared Ross : Phantoms, Flyers

I had the satisfaction of being on the ice a few times with this guy in various hockey camps and pick ups while I was growin up down in Huntsville, Alabama. That's right folks, ice hockey in Alabama.

Jared Ross, the first Alabama native to ever make the NHL, is the real deal ladies and gentlemen. He may not be today's 6'2 220 lb. hoss, but this guy can fly. Last year he won the AHL's fastest skater award in the skills competition, not to mention setting records for assists and points in the AHL all-star game, with 1g 6a.

I kinda wish the Flyers weren't so strong, I may have seen Ross a lot more by now, but it seems like there's not a lot of room for another speedy Briere type forward. Where Briere has Ross in finesse, I think the Flyers realize Ross can bring the gritty puck cycling aspects of the game that they are looking for.

Anyone have any insight into the Flyers offense, or how Ross fits with the future of the team? I really look forward to seeing this guy as a permanent member of the NHL for the next decade or so.

Here's an article about his latest call up: http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?...id=DL|PHI|home

The best he can hope for with the Flyers is to be the 3rd or 4th line center. With Blair Betts and Darroll Powe suffering injuries this weekend, both to be out over a month, this is Ross' shot to show that he deserves more than just spot duty, either with the Flyers or elsewhere. I don't think Flyers fans are expecting much, so if Ross just plays a solid, defensively responsible game, he should be fine. It would be nice if he can chip in some offense, but I'm not expecting much. Hopefully he'll be a nice surprise.

But anyways, good to hear that you're supporting hockey in a "non-traditional hockey market". Roll Tide!

Yes indeed it is certainly very unique around here. Thanks to NHL center ice I'll be able to see the Flyers head out to Colorado this evening, good luck to the team and Ross!
