anybody hear Savard's agent's comments about contract talks?
Heard a quick blurb on XM Center Ice today. Savard's agent said that contract talks are ongoing but cautioned that the clock is ticking to get something done. I haven't found that online anywhere yet, don't know where it originated from.
I know it's not much to go on, but reading between the lines, he's rattling the Sabre a little for the Bruins to get a good offer in front of them before it's too late.

I'm thinking extension by the deadline otherwise he goes to the market.

Kinda makes you wonder how serious the talks have been to this point if he has to play the "clock is ticking" card doesn't it?
We're still what, 5 months away from the trade deadline...
I remain hopeful that they'll sign him. It seems like the right for both sides despite the $ hassles.
I wonder if the agent is turning up the heat because the team is obviously struggling with offense with Savard out. It's a good time to remind everyone how much he means to the team - I guess.

Good point, and he's going to have to keep reminding them of that. Savard's point total's will take a hit from the time out of the lineup, so he's not going to have another 90+ point season this year. Depending on how long it takes for him to get his timing back he could still score at a PPG pace though.

Good point, and a shrewd move that would be... though from what we've seen Chia isn't one to be rushed into something. I still don't get the clock is ticking thing... he may actually be causing more damage then good with statements like that if he isn't careful.
If Chia is willing to go to wall with Savard, and negotiate in the offseason, he may not be so willing if he thinks there's a good chance Savvy goes to FA anyway... could be the difference between Savvy walking as a Free Agent or being a deadline deal (assuming he doesn't resign).
I can't see PC making a final decision on Savvy before he comes back, and he sees how they perform with Savard in the lineup for a while. I'm guessing a deal (if one were coming) wouldn't come until the newyear.

Maybe just the agent holding Chia's feet to the fire a little by raising the specter of departure by UFA?
Obviously the agent didn't overtly say that so I don't want to read so much into it. But the Bruins need the offense, they could use a little good PR, and maybe the money isn't where they want it to be yet. Hence, pressure.
On a tangential note, with the recent attention to a downturn in attendance this year, is it possible the cap may in fact go down despite Bettman's hand waiving recently that "it's all good?" Seems like there are some unfavorable signs.
BTW - how does this work: With the NHL owning a team (Phoenix) and the league revenues directly impacting the salary cap and NHLPA, how is it not conflict of interest for a team to exist in that state? It seems like it's a very atypical situation vis-a-vis accounting and the CBA.
You know what stinks is that it feels like we inevitably have to lose one of Savard, Krejci, Bergeron. It's hard to imagine that they'll pay between $14-16M for the 3 centers.
Having just lost Kessel, I find it discouraging that another top offensive guy could be heading out the door in the next 10 months. Maybe Chia will work his magic and keep all 3 but it seems like a real luxury in this cap world.
The agent never said the clock is ticking, unless I'm missing something. Here's the full quote:
We continue to discuss regularly,” agent Larry Kelly told ESPN.com Monday night at the Hockey Hall of Fame. “Both sides are interested in getting something done. But obviously there are issues we are working through.”
Sounds about as standard a reply as you'd expect. I expect to hear tons of innuendo about Savard (especially from Toronto) until he signs. Not much of a story here.

I mentioned this in another thread... I got the sense that Savard was playing the same card during his in game interview with Jack & Brick the other day.
Also, the whole clock is ticking reference could be an allusion to a deadline that they have set. (Luongo did the same thing with Nonis.) If we can't get a deal done by Thanksgiving then we'll put off all talks until after the season.
OT: Is Kelly the agent that Chiarelli used to be partners with?

I actually find it refreshing when comparing it to basebal & the fact that the Yankees & Redsox can pretty well outspend everyone. Every team as the same chance to win in the NHL. Losing players as the Bruins have done is a sign of success under the new system.
This is an easy way to analyze which front office does the best job. It comes down to how you manage your assets. That is why I would either trade Savard this year or let him walk at the end of the year. I feel it is better in the longrun to keep Krejci & Bergeron even if you may suffer a bit shortterm. Cap management.

Resign Savard and move Bergeron to RW where is 4.5 mil is better served. SOB can be third line center at 800-900k. Look for a sucker to take Ryder's 4 mil for next year or just ride it out.
One more year after that then we can finally get Sturms and Ryder's 7.5 mil off the books and do some real damage.
I also find it very interesting in the timing of Savard & his agent talking about the contract. He has been out of the lineup & the Bs are struggling offensively. I don't think it is a coinicidence that these comments are coming out during this time. Kind of pushing the Bs brass & using the leverage he has now. Hopefully Chia realizes this & don't overpay on yrs or terms for Savard.

savard was tossing indirect compliments to himself for the entire time the mic was in his face. i was a little creeped out at first, but by the end i couldnt help but laugh to myself.

sob is definitely looking like he is capable of a 3rd line center job with paille and a filler. i would be all for it if the numbers worked, but i think savard is going to command a bit more cash than chia will dole out.
Didn't Savard say awhile back he'd take a bit less to finish his career in Boston? I'd like to see him back next year, but you don't overpay for a 33 year old center. Generally, you don't like to overpay for anyone, but at least with the younger guys there's room for growth and improvement, making those ones a little easier to stomach (like Lucic's deal). I don't like the fact he and his agent are playing games or whatever these recent comments were intended for.
