Burke Piling On The Manure

I dont know if this has been posted or not, but if its not this is what Burke had to say about the goal tending situation in Toronto today..

Quote:
“Vesa’s our starter,” Burke apparently said with a straight face. “We made it clear this summer that we signed The Monster to play in 25 or 30 games.
“…Jonas is playing very well for us right now, but we expect Vesa to battle back and re-gain the net.”
Full Article

uhh what?!? , i hope he's not serious and is only trying to get Vesa's trade value up by playing playing like every two weeks or something.

That's funny after just watching sportsnet where Wilson was interviewed and he said "There is no debate, Gustavsson is our guy and we will play him until I think a change needs to be made"

I'm calling Burke's bluff. It's just PR to not upset Vesa.

Berger's posts are often ridiculous, however he's on the spot with this one - Burke's comments are hogwash.

However, double-B is always very calculated with what he says, and therefore likely said it to:

a) take the pressure off of Jonas and shield the ROOKIE
b) keep Vesa motivated, because Vesa playing better = beneficial to the Leafs on ice this season, and beneficial for any potential trade that Toskala could be packaged in, in the future (nobody will take Vesa outright, it will be a package)

Burke is probably just testing the Monster's mental fortitude.

He probably leaked the Giguere trade rumours, too, just to see how Toskala/Monster react.

Or maybe this is all a ploy so that he can lowball the Monster on a contract offer this summer, instead of giving him the 3M+ he'll probably deserve.

i have a solution.just give Gusty The Calder & Vezina Trophy's right now so we can end this silly debate about which goalie is #1 & send Vesa packing.

Why is this unbeliveable? It's the RIGHT thing to say.

It's in this teams best interest that Vesa bounce back, any way you look at it (whether he stays or is traded). And seriously, monster has looked great but it takes more than a few games to really prove yourself. Arguably more than 1 season too.

wow, crack reporting there, Howie.

big surprise that he's not throwing Toskala under the bus in public.

big surprise that the goalie that Burke told us "he went harder after than he's ever gone after anyone" is now the starting goalie over a goalie who Burke called out last year as "not good enough".

Way to go Howard Berger, you investigative genius you.

Yup. That'll make him the GM ALL the players will wanna play for.

No he's not going to say Vesa is crap, but he could just say No Comment, as he does so well.

Dumb.

Burke is saying all the right things there. Defending a goalie everyone else seems to be crapping on, urging him to regain his form while also pushing the Monster. Can't say it's a bad move.

Probably the smartest most calculated comments BB has made to the press since he came here. Its called salesmanship. So what if he panics a few dumb Leaf fans.

As we have quickly learned here in Toronto, let's not take Burkies words too seriously.

I'm sure there are multiple reasons for him saying that...

keeping pressure off of Jonas, not killing Vesa's confidence further, not reducing Vesa's already miniscule worth to another team potentially

but in private, I doubt he thinks that at all

Why is there no middle ground? Why can't he just say that they'll be rolling with the Monster right now because things are working but that Vesa will get his chance to contribute at some point?

Coach's job to say that. Coach said it. One of Berger and Burke is an idiot. It isn't Burke.

But it flies in the face of all logic to say that Vesa is still the No. 1 guy. The idea was plausible at the start of the year. Not now.

Obviously trying to motivate Toskala and get him some confidence, and keep the fire under Jonas to keep having to prove himself.

If you’re a fan of the Leafs, you’d better pray that double-B was piling on the manure in some wayward attempt to bolster Vesa Toskala’s flagging confidence.

He knows what he notes is the fact of the matter, and then writes an entire article based on something he knows isn't the case for the sake of riling up readers.

edit: Sorry, Berger angers me lol..

In that situation, saying no comment would be close to saying that Toskala is crap, I think.
