I'm having this argument with my buddy and he's convinced that Filp is better than Stajan. Then i was throwing names like Ponikarovsky and Hagman out there. As I think Poni is also better then Filp, I think Hagman and Filp are pretty much on the same level. But anyways the original argument was about Stajan/Filppula so lets leave it there. Opinions?
Both players are 25 and were drafted in 2002.
Filppula: 246 GP - 43 G - 57 A - 100 PTS (.407 PPG)
08/09: 80 GP - 12 G - 28 A - 40 PTS
TOI (08/09): 16:06
Stajan: 402 GP - 74 G - 115 A - 189 PTS (.470 PPG)
08/09: 76 GP - 15 G - 40 A - 55 PTS
TOI (08/09): 16:55
Their point totals are very similar but you would have to look into the role each has on their respective teams. Val centers the wings third line with heavy defensive responsibility and while I don't know what Stajan's role was in previous seasons, I know he's centering Kessel. That alone says something as to where he is on the Leafs depth chart.
Flip is immensely more skilled with the puck while his speed and dangles leave Stajan in the dust. If Flip was on TO, he would instantly become their best forward other than Kessel.
This guy is yet to bust out and produce like his skill set leads us to believe.
Stajan is a decent forward. While, he doesn't lack the overall skill set of Valterri, but I'll give him marks as having solid hockey sense. He's also responsible defensively.

Again, not even close.
If only such an immense difference in skill resulted in an immense difference in production, eh?
Filpulla is fantastic in just about every single aspect of the game.
despite the fact that he doesn't get his fair share of minutes. He still produces quite efficiently and is amazing in his own end.
If on any other team, Filpulla would be known better. Since he's on the Wings, his playing time is less than it should be (yet no complaints from him) and his skill is shadowed by the likes of Datsyuk and Zetterberg and so on.
Filpulla is better than the average fan who doesn't watch enough hockey other than his own team would think.
I take the guy who has proven himself in the playoffs over any of the three Leafs.
I'm not voting or anything, but this has caught my attention. Filppula has scored more points per game in the playoffs than the regular season every pro season he's played. No matter the league, team or season. I just find that awesome.
Filppula was the Wings best forward this year before he got injured. He was the teams 2nd line center when they won the Cup. Matt Stajan, is a joke. He can't even hold Filppula's jock strap.

Not even close? Really?
you're joking right?
stajan has averaged 16-18 minutes per game every single season.....putting up 189 points in 402 games....
filppula has averaged 8 minutes per game every single year up until 2009 where he averaged 13 minutes per game....
... and he has 100 points in 240 games....
....that's what you're basing your judgement on? ha! you're funny. THOSE STATS? Really!? as if 189 points in 402 games is wayyyyyy better than 100 points in 240 games...(please note sarcasm) ahhahaha.... and when you take into consideration the icetime factor.....it's really not even close...
nevermind the fact that filppula is better in his own end, wins faceoffs, kills penalties, is on the PP, blocks shots nonstop, has a great pair of hands, is WAY FASTER, and on top of all that.....he begins to PERFORM EVEN BETTER IN THE POST SEASON....
....we already know what filppula is capable of in the post season...who's to say stajan would do the same?
